The Evaluation of UNDP Support to Conflict-Affected Countries in the Context of UN Peace Operations provides an independent assessment of the evolving UNDP role in conflict-affected settings where UNDP is one among several operational partners during and immediately after a peace operation mandated by the United Nations Security Council. The evaluation provides findings, conclusions and recommendations relating to UNDP's mandate, operational efficiency, resource capacity and comparative advantage in a competitive aid environment. In particular it considers the UNDP role within integrated UN peacekeeping operations and the relationships and partnerships under such circumstances. It further considers the UNDP contribution to developing national capacities for conflict prevention, mitigation and recovery.

The United Nations Development Programme is the central network co-ordinating the work of the United Nations in over 160 developing countries. This 2006 book provides the first authoritative and accessible history of the Programme and its predecessors. Based on the findings of hundreds of interviews and archives in more than two dozen countries, Craig Murphy traces the history of the UNDP's organizational structure and mission, its relationship to the multilateral financial institutions, and the development of its doctrines. He argues that the principles on which the UNDP was founded remain as relevant in a world divided by terrorism as they were in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, as are the fundamental problems that have plagued the Programme from its origin, including the opposition of traditionally isolationist forces in the industrialized world.

Disasters and violent conflicts continue to claim lives and destroy livelihoods of far too many people around the world and undermine development achievements. This can both heighten social and economic insecurity, and endanger those already vulnerable in societies, including women and young people. This focus on the restoration of economic strength in the aftermath of a conflict or disaster fosters long-term peace and stability, creates resilience to future crises and sets in motion an equitable and sustainable process of development. UNDP approach to early stabilization and inclusive growth embraces nationally-owned, crisis and gender-sensitive interventions that are responsive to market conditions and aligned with security, recovery, conflict prevention and development programming of other partners. To highlight some achievements in 2011, UNDP worked with partners to create over 5.2 million workdays of emergency jobs; provided support to over 101,000 crisis affected people, including ex-combatants and internally displaced people (of whom 40% were women) to establish micro, small and medium enterprises; and rehabilitated socioeconomic infrastructure for development to occur in places as diverse as Afghanistan, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Honduras, Indonesia, Kenya, Myanmar, Nigeria, Nepal, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, South Sudan, Tajikistan and Uganda, helping to sustain livelihoods and revitalise economies in these crisis and conflict-affected countries.

This book brings together a series of working papers, produced by interdisciplinary groups of academics within the project, on progress made under the Millennium Development Goals and introduces current debates surrounding the Sustainable Development Goals and the post-2015 agenda. Originating from an interdisciplinary, multi-institution research collaboration, Thinking Beyond Sectors for Sustainable Development, funded by UCL Grand Challenges. The project brought together over thirty academics from UCL, SOAS, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Birkbeck, Institute of Education, and the Royal Veterinary College, and was coordinated by the London International Development Centre (LIDC). The book explores potential interactions between sustainable development goals in the post-2015 development agenda. Introduced and edited by Prof Jeff Waage (LIDC) and Christopher Yap (LIDC), chapters are dedicated to the topics of Biodiversity and Ecosystems, Human Health, Urban Poverty, Climate and Climate Change, Population Growth, Food and Agriculture, Information, Education and Knowledge, and Governance. Each chapter reflects on the three principle questions of 1) What is the historical process by which goal setting in this sector has developed?, 2) What progress has been achieved with this sector through MDGs and other processes? and 3) What is the current debate about future goal setting?
