Abstract

The ISTTT series is the main gathering for the world's transportation and traffic theorists, and the resulting volume is a field-defining milestone featuring the most promising thinking and theoretical developments. It reflects the major renewal the field is experiencing, with the entry of many new scientists from a variety of disciplines, and the mutual coexistence of a growing number of theoretical perspectives and modelling cultures.

Abstract

Introduction to Network Traffic Flow Theory: Principles, Concepts, Models, and Methods provides a comprehensive introduction to modern theories for modeling, mathematical analysis and traffic simulations in road networks. The book breaks ground, addressing traffic flow theory in a network setting and providing researchers and transportation professionals with a better understanding of how network traffic flows behave, how congestion builds and dissipates, and how to develop strategies to alleviate network traffic congestion. The book also shows how network traffic flow theory is key to understanding traffic estimation, control, management and planning. Users wills find this to be a great resource on both theory and applications across a wide swath of subjects, including road networks and reduced traffic congestion.

Abstract

This text provides a comprehensive and concise treatment of the topic of traffic flow theory and includes several topics relevant to today’s highway transportation system. It provides the fundamental principles of traffic flow theory as well as applications of those principles for evaluating specific types of facilities (freeways, intersections, etc.).  Newer concepts of Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and their potential impact on traffic flow are discussed. State-of-the-art in traffic flow research and microscopic traffic analysis and traffic simulation have significantly advanced and are also discussed in this text. Real world examples and useful problem sets complement each chapter. This textbook is meant for use in advanced undergraduate/graduate level courses in traffic flow theory with prerequisites including two semesters of calculus, statistics, and an introductory course in transportation. The text would also be of interest to transportation professionals as a refresher in traffic flow theory, or as a reference.  Students and engineers of diverse backgrounds will find this text accessible and applicable to today’s traffic issues.

Abstract

The dynamics of the interplay between the visitor and the exhibition environment form complex circulation patterns. As an exhibition designer, developing an understanding of those dynamics is important for improving visitor satisfaction. However, an overwhelming number of variables may transform the exhibition design process into educated guesswork. Designing through trial and error is just not feasible. In addition, as a result of the nature of creating built environments, modifying decisions later in the design process results in significant costs. The designer has to rely on extensive exper

Abstract

This open access book presents research and evaluation results of the Austrian flagship project "Connecting Austria," illustrating the wide range of research needs and questions that arise when semi-automated truck platooning is deployed in Austria. The work presented is introduced in the context of work in similar research areas around the world. This interdisciplinary research effort considers aspects of engineering, road-vehicle and infrastructure technologies, traffic management and optimization, traffic safety, and psychology, as well as potential economic effects.

Abstract

In recent years flows in networks have attracted the interest of many researchers from different areas, e.g. applied mathematicians, engineers, physicists, economists. The main reason for this ubiquity is the wide and diverse range of applications, such as vehicular traffic, supply chains, blood flow, irrigation channels, data networks and others. This book presents an extensive set of notes by world leaders on the main mathematical techniques used to address such problems, together with investigations into specific applications. The main focus is on partial differential equations in networks, but ordinary differential equations and optimal transport are also included. Moreover, the modeling is completed by analysis, numerics, control and optimization of flows in networks. The book will be a valuable resource for every researcher or student interested in the subject.
