Abstract

In this book, we present a collection of articles covering a wide range of current aging research and highlighting its prospects and future directions. These articles are based on or related to the topics of the 3rd International Conference «Genetics of aging and longevity». The Conference took place 6-10 April, 2014 in Sochi, the city located on the Black Sea coast near the Caucasian mountains, in Russia. Top gerontologists and geneticists from 31 countries around the world came together to discuss current problems in many areas related to the genetics of longevity and mechanisms of aging. We would like to thank those of them who contributed to this e-Book by sharing latest achievements, ideas and hypotheses. We hope that this e-Book will come to notice of scientists interested in the development of genetics of aging and longevity and in the search for life-beneficial environments and life-prolonging interventions.

Abstract

Pebbles are usually found only on the beach, in the liminal space between land and sea. But what happens when pebbles extend inland and create a ridge brushing against the sky? Landscape in the Longue Durée is a 4,000 year history of pebbles. It is based on the results of a four-year archaeological research project of the east Devon Pebblebed heathlands, a fascinating and geologically unique landscape in the UK whose bedrock is composed entirely of water-rounded pebbles. Christopher Tilley uses this landscape to argue that pebbles are like no other kind of stone – they occupy an especial place both in the prehistoric past and in our contemporary culture. It is for this reason that we must re-think continuity and change in a radically new way by considering embodied relations between people and things over the long term.Dividing the book into two parts, Tilley first explores the prehistoric landscape from the Mesolithic to the end of the Iron Age, and follows with an analysis of the same landscape from the eighteenth into the twenty-first century. The major findings of the four-year study are revealed through this chronological journey: from archaeological discoveries, such as the excavation of three early Bronze Age cairns, to the documentation of all 829 surviving pebble structures, and beyond, to the impact of the landscape on local economies and its importance today as a military training camp. The results of the study will inform many disciplines including archaeology, cultural and art history, anthropology, conservation, and landscape studies.

Abstract

Abstract

This work defines the creative principles of Michel Butor's less-known writings that are based on experiment, poetizing and interaction with fine arts. It analyses hundreds of texts and art sources and focuses on the five-part Illustrations cycle, pointing out Butor's most important creative techniques: intertextuality, which deals with an innovative use of citations and rewriting not only other authors' but especially his own texts; and intermediality, dealing with an interaction between fine arts and literature. It presents Butor's transposition of an aesthetical effect provoked by an artwork into a poetic language. The analyses and theoretical reflections are placed into the broad context of Butor's work, with an emphasis on theoretical issues and on the continuity of procedures throughout his work.

Abstract

Abstract

In the fifteenth century, the Oblates of Santa Francesca Romana, a fledgling community of religious women in Rome, commissioned an impressive array of artwork for their newly acquired living quarters, the Tor de'Specchi. The imagery focused overwhelmingly on the sensual, corporeal nature of contemporary spirituality, populating the walls of the monastery with a highly naturalistic assortment of earthly, divine, and demonic figures. This book draws on art history, anthropology, and gender studies to explore the disciplinary and didactic role of the images, as well as their relationship to important papal projects at the Vatican.

Abstract

In the course of a writing career spanning half a century, Michel Butor has produced a remarkable range and volume of publications, including fiction, travel works, poetry, critical essays and various types of mixed-genre works which resist ready categorisation. Much of this very diverse oeuvre is marked by his life-long passion for the visual arts. This study is the first full-length analysis of the role played by the references to the visual, plastic and architectural arts in Butor's work. It addresses a wide range of issues including the role of the artwork, building or monument as narrativ
