Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyse the pragmatic development of language groups at different proficiency levels and to investigate the relationship between interlanguage pragmatics and grammatical competence. For this study, 36 native Spanish speaking EFL learners at different proficiency levels were asked to respond in English to 24 different situations that called for the speech acts of request and apology. Results showed three important aspects. The first finding suggested that basic adult learners possess a pragmatic knowledge in their L1 that allows them to focus on the intended m

Abstract

The construction of discourse is a challenging field where many discourse structures and interactional effects remain poorly understood. This analysis provides a systematic explanation for the way in which discourse participants (speaker and hearer) are construed in Spanish through a corpus-driven analysis of informal conversation, TV-debates and parliamentary debates. It deals not only with person deixis, but with the full range of possibilities speakers choose from when profiling their self or their relationship with the interlocutor. This analysis also offers new insights into the operation

Abstract

La polisemia y la polifuncionalidad ocupan un papel importante en la estructura de motivación de los marcadores del discurso. El concepto de polifuncionalidad carece de una teorización adecuada y de un análisis sistemático de su interacción con la polisemia. En este sentido, se analizarán signos discursivos con base adjetival en datos orales del español chileno. Se comprueba que la polifuncionalidad actúa como motor no solo de la polisemia, sino también de la gramaticalización, enfocada desde sus relaciones dialécticas con las tradiciones oral y escrita.
