Abstract

The postwar political and technological-industrial revolutions have brought profound changes to Poland. Yet although a generation has now grown up in the Communist ideology, the transformation it demands is far from complete. Traditional institutions, values, and patterns of behavior continue to exist and are in daily confrontation with the new regime.Education must obviously play a critical role in the process of socialization, and teachers are expected to instill in future citizens a thorough commitment to socialist values. But how well are they equipped for this task? To answer this question Joseph R. Fiszman has done extensive field work in Poland sponsored by the U.S. Office of Education. He is the first American citizen permitted to do research of this type in an Eastern European country. He has examined all aspects of the teachers' lives, from social background and training to attitudes, values, and status in the community. His findings are an important contribution to the attempt to understand the process of change in societies where revolutionary values face the entrenched power of tradition.Originally published in 1973.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Abstract

This book offers an exposition of the history of teacher preparation in Aotearoa New Zealand, from the outset through current and future trends. Beginning with an overview of the historical context of New Zealand schooling, and the development of local forms of schools, established in the early 19th century, this book highlights the importance new settlers placed on education. Featured also is the significance of the Native School system in the story of teacher preparation in New Zealand, the complexities initially experienced in staffing Native Schools, and the way in which these schools served to reinforce the colonial agenda.Throughout, this work uncovers the major role of teacher training colleges in the development and preparation of teachers for a range of schools. The authors examine the initial struggle to survive, the expansion and growth, and finally amalgamation or closure of these institutions. The tussle for responsibility and control of these colleges as long-standing contributors to the preparation of teachers is also addressed. Regulatory changes, policy debates and critical analysis of future trends in relation to the preparation of teachers and the themes that shift and change and rupture at particular historical moments are not unique and are explored throughout.

Abstract

Schools of education with utilitarian goals and strict standardization - often called "Normal Schools" - have been widely criticized by both the academy and the general public. In a story that resonates across Canada, The Grand Regulator examines an educational system that failed to inspire great teachers and produce imaginative, thinking citizens. Drawing on an array of archival materials, government publications, and firsthand accounts with former Normal School students, George Perry provides a rich reconstruction of the intellectual, social, economic, and political foundations of teacher education in Nova Scotia, and the methodological preoccupations that have hampered its subsequent development. He shows how a supposed science of education based on child psychology, in concert with the province's regulation of public schooling, justified low expectations for the education of most children and how standardized training programs deemphasized teachers' general liberal education and intellectual curiosity. The most complete study of Canadian teacher education to date, The Grand Regulator presents an analysis of perennial issues regarding the improvement of education that continue to concern us, and illuminates ways of raising the level of instruction in our present-day schools.
