Faulkner and Hemingway can probably be considered the greatest American writers of the twentieth century. In the mid 1960s, Fabbri entrusted the task of addressing their work and style to the militant critic Ruggero Jacobbi, who had shortly returned to Europe after a period of voluntary exile in Brazil. The two resulting volumes became pendant pieces in a unified meditation on the motives and movements of true poetry. Having become practically impossible to get hold of, Firenze University Press is now republishing them in the same format, preceded by an introduction by Nicola Turi. Thus the critical opus of Jacobbi is enriched with another bibliographical entry, made available once more through a painstaking operation of retrieval promoted by Anna Dolfi and furthered through the kind assistance of Ruggero's wife Mara Jacobbi. The portrait that emerges continues to be that of an intellectual gifted with extraordinary versatility, capable of delivering unforgettable critical insights on every page.

The English Franciscan Roger Bacon (c.1214-92) holds a controversial but important position in the development of modern science. He has been portrayed as an isolated figure, at odds with his influential order and ultimately condemned by it. This major study, the first in English for nearly sixty years, offers a provocative new interpretation of both Bacon and his environment. Amanda Power argues that his famous writings for the papal curia were the product of his critical engagement with the objectives of the Franciscan order and the reform agenda of the thirteenth-century church. Fearing that the apocalypse was at hand and Christians unprepared, Bacon explored radical methods for defending, renewing and promulgating the faith within Christendom and beyond. Read in this light, his work indicates the breadth of imagination possible in a time of expanding geographical and intellectual horizons.

This book examines Roger Bacon’s alchemical theories, and explains how he believed that the key to extending life lay not in the curricula as taught in the medical faculties of the universities, but in the study of alchemy. Though twelfth- and thirteenth-century alchemy was generally concerned with the transmutation of metals, Bacon’s alchemy was a much larger area of study, and encompassed the generation and corruption of all material things in the sublunary world. It was this aspect of alchemy, which Bacon referred to as speculative alchemy, that explained how the four elements of fire, air, water, and earth interacted with each other to make the basis of reality as man could know it. Thus, the study of alchemy in conjunction with humoral medicine could explain not only how the human body worked, but how it interacted with the materials around it, illuminating the method of prolonging life to extreme lengths. .
