De Franse historicus en filosoof Pierre Rosanvallon is een van de spraakmakendste denkers over de hedendaagse democratie. Hij gaat niet uit van een normatief ideaalmodel van democratie, maar vertrekt vanuit het historische gegeven dat de democratie steeds opnieuw hooggestemde verwachtingen en hoop wekt, maar evenzeer gepaard gaat met teleurstellingen, verwarring en weerstand. Origineel, erudiet en nauwgezet beschrijft Rosanvallon de geschiedenis van die permanente spanning. In De democratie denken. Werk in uitvoering gaat Pierre Rosanvallon in op zijn werk en methode, de betekenis van het politieke wantrouwen, de afnemende legitimiteit van democratische instellingen, de tanende zeggingskracht van het gelijkheidsideaal en de veronachtzaming van het belang van het bestuur in de democratie. Het verschijnsel populisme analyseert hij als een pathologie van de democratie. Om die pathologie te bezweren, komt het erop aan opnieuw een gemeenschappelijke wereld te organiseren en daarin het algemeen belang centraal te stellen.

De dialoog rond de uitbouw van een seculiere samenleving wordt vandaag wereldwijd gevoerd. Daarbij wordt vaak gefocust op de commotie rond het hoofddoekenverbod. Maar het gekrakeel rond het dragen van de hoofddoek is slechts een symptoom van een dieper liggende discussie. Wat verstaan we onder een seculiere samenleving? Hoe kunnen we samenleven in het besef dat er een diversiteit is van opvattingen en dat we die diversiteit als uitgangspunt moeten leren aanvaarden? Hoe daarin een positie innemen die rekening houdt met de complexiteit van deze problematiek? Geïnspireerd door het liberale, pluralistische model, wil het boek Hoofddoek, hoofdzonde? een redelijk en sociaal dienstbaar alternatief aanreiken voor de republikeinse vorm van secularisme die graag het monopolie van verlicht-rationeel denken en sociale dienstbaarheid opeist. Of 'Contact Zones' and 'Liminal Spaces' introduces the publication series "Diversity / Diversité / Diversität" of the International Research Training Group (IRTG) Diversity (Trier/Montreal/Saarbrücken). The contributions to this volume address core concepts and research perspectives of our interdisciplinary research group. The IRTG Diversity focuses on a comparative and historically situated analysis of discourses and representations of diversity and cultural pluralism in North America and Europe. The empirical research published in this volume demonstrates how these discourses and representations of diversity create overlapping zones of geographical and chronological reach. These overlapping and highly dynamic zones bear the characteristics of 'contact zones' and 'liminal spaces'. However, they receive their social and cultural dynamism from everyday practices of cultural translation.
