"The Variae of Cassiodorus have long been valued as an epistolary collection offering a window into political and cultural life in a so-called barbarian successor state in sixth-century Italy. However, this study is the first to treat them as more than an assemblage of individual case studies and to analyse the collection's wider historical context. M. Shane Bjornlie highlights the insights the Variae provides into early medieval political, ecclesiastical, fiscal and legal affairs and the influence of the political and military turbulence of Justinian's re-conquest of Italy, and of political and cultural exchanges between Italy and Constantinople. The book also explores how Cassiodorus revised, updated and assembled the Variae for publication and what this reveals about his motives for publishing an epistolary record and for his own political life at a crucial period of transformation for the Roman world"--

"Cnaeus et Sextus, les fils de Pompée, ont joué un rôle majeur dans les guerres civiles qui ont secoué la République romaine dans les dernières années de son existence. Opposants résolus à César puis au triumvirat, leur parcours politique et militaire a fait l'objet d'un réexamen en tenant compte de leur entourage. En croisant les sources littéraires - notamment Cicéron, Appien et Cassius Dion - et numismatiques, cet ouvrage propose de mener l'enquête sur les deux frères, et vient interroger la manière dont ils ont construit leur pouvoir et leur légitimité. Pour cela, il s'appuie sur deux études préalables: l'examen de leurs émissions monétaires, pour analyser leurs discours de légitimation ; la constitution d'une prosopographie de leur entourage, afin d'identifier leurs partisans et comprendre la formation et l'évolution de ce groupe. Von den Nazis bereits 1931 zur Emigration gezwungen, musste er die Zerstörung seines Lebenswerks, die Plünderung des Instituts, Verbot und Verbrennung seiner Bücher ohnmächtig im französischen Exil mitansehen. This book narrates the life and work of the Jewish social democrat and gay physician Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935), who launched the world's first emancipation movement for homosexuals at the end of the 19th century. Hirschfeld was a pioneer in the field of sexology, and opened the first Institute of Sexology in Berlin after the First World War.
