A Time for Sorrow: Recovering the Practice of Lament in the Life of the Church examines the overlooked and often misunderstood practice of lament within the Christian faith. The book, edited by Sean M. McDonough and Scott Harrower, brings together theological and historical perspectives to argue for the reintegration of lament into contemporary church practice. It explores lament in both the Old and New Testaments, its historical role among Evangelicals, and its importance in pastoral care and communal worship. The authors aim to show that lament is a biblically endorsed way for believers to express grief, sorrow, and repentance, thereby fostering a more genuine and compassionate faith community.

An interesting feature in the lament psalms is the sudden change of mood. Unfortunately, as the term that has come to be associated with the subject indicates – ‘Certainty of a Hearing’ – the change of mood is understood only in terms of a movement from lament to praise. This has led to a redefinition of lament in terms of petition and an overemphasis on praise. The present book seeks to redress this one-sided emphasis by drawing attention to the other movements in the Psalter – the reverse movement from praise to lament, return to lament after praise and the alternation between the two. We do not only have a ‘Certainty of a Hearing’; we also have an ‘Uncertainty of a Hearing’.

Laments of the Virgin Mary represent a devotional genre that offered its clerical and lay audiences of the High and Late Middle Ages a deeply inspiring, yet at the same time ambiguous, religious experience. Through the deeply emotional and markedly animated representation of the Passion, seen as if through the eyes of the mother of God, audiences and performers were not only reminded of the redemptive power of the Cross, but encouraged to experience Christ's sacrifice in a more personal and intimate manner. In the pious practice of imitatio Mariae, believers mirrored the sorrow of the mother through their own bodies in order to develop a kind of visceral empathy towards, and hence a deeper understanding of, the divine.

Lament seems to have been universal in the ancient world. As such, it is an excellent touchstone for the comparative study of attitudes towards death and the afterlife, human relations to the divine, views of the cosmos, and the constitution of the fabric of society in different times and places. This collection of essays offers the first ever comparative approach to ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern traditions of lament. Beginning with the Sumerian and Hittite traditions, the volume moves on to examine Bronze Age iconographic representations of lamentation, Homeric lament, depictions of

[The author] traces the way the Psalms exemplify and create a grammar for living a life of faith. He explores both the genre and shape of the Psalter and focuses upon the themes of lament and of praise. He concludes that the Psalter directs readers to use the psalms of lament and praise as models for life, depending on God's justice in times of anger, singing God's praise in times of thanksgiving, and always acknowledging God as Lord over hardships and blessings. Only in this way, he argues, can humans live the faith of the Psalms -- a faith defined by complete dependence on God. -- paraphrased from jacket.

Lament, mourning, and the transmissibility of a tradition in the aftermath of destruction are prominent themes in Jewish thought. The corpus of lament literature, building upon and transforming the biblical Book of Lamentations, provides a unique lens for thinking about the relationships between destruction and renewal, mourning and remembrance, loss and redemption, expression and the inexpressible. This anthology features four texts by Gershom Scholem on lament, translated here for the first time into English. The volume also includes original essays by leading scholars, which interpret Scholem's texts and situate them in relation to other Weimar-era Jewish thinkers, including Walter Benjamin, Franz Rosenzweig, Franz Kafka, and Paul Celan, who drew on the textual traditions of lament to respond to the destruction and upheavals of the early twentieth century. Also included are studies on the textual tradition of lament in Judaism, from biblical, rabbinic, and medieval lamentations to contemporary Yemenite women's laments. This collection, unified by its strong thematic focus on lament, shows the fruitfulness of studying contemporary and modern texts alongside the traditional textual sources that informed them.

This collection dissects post-independence Cameroon as a representative postcolonial junction. The history that assists in the writing of the poems is a necessary background to understand the dislocated vision of an erstwhile independent territory. After a patriotic pastime of sweeping every bit of rubbish under the carpet of national unity for over fifty years, the collection summons us to introspect on the consequences of feeding and living on a national lie. It is only after such reflection that, hopefully, remedial gestures can offer ënew dreams on the dawn of new sleepí.

Suicide, depression, eating disorders, and other mental health illnesses have dramatically increased among adolescents in recent decades. Our American culture demands high levels of success and propagates a ""feel good"" attitude that denies pain, loss, and failure. Churches contribute to these distressing realities among youth. Our theology associates ""being happy"" with ""true faithfulness"" to God, overemphasizing praise and thanksgiving while neglecting lament, even though lament comprises the largest number of Psalms. There is much good in the lives of today's adolescents, but there is also much grief and woundedness. Helping Youth Grieve exposes the warped view of God modeled and taught to our young people. This book portrays a God who yearns to hear the honest cries of our youth, even when that involves blaming God! Spiritual caregivers will discover good news in biblical lament for its role in pastoral care and faith formation of adolescents. ""Bob Yoder is a grief specialist and this book recognizes a broad spectrum of losses that can lead some young people today into quiet yet desperate despair. Some parents and youth leaders are aware of our need for empathy and understand basically some of the classic stages of grief. Yoder is taking us deeper, allowing for the kind of healing that lasts because instead of applying good humanistic and spiritual bandages, it allows for healing from the inside out."" --Dean Borgman, Professor of Youth and Family Ministries, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary ""The care of youth has a new conversation partner. With compassion and wisdom Yoder empowers pastors and teachers to be a transformative presence to persons young in years but old in experience. His witness gives voice to the multiple losses and traumas youth know intimately. Lament is needed, more than ever. Helping Youth Grieve should be read, discussed, and lived. Hope will follow."" --Jaco Hamman, Associate Professor of Religion, Psychology and Culture, Vanderbilt University ""Masterfully written, as well as pragmatic, Yoder calls the church to reconsider biblical lament. Like a wise friend, Yoder powerfully articulates the losses that teens face today, and accompanies us as we stand in the midst of their vulnerability offering tools and love. An absolute must-read for youth workers and parents of teenagers!"" --Rachel S. Gerber, Denominational Minister of Youth and Young Adults, Mennonite Church USA Bob Yoder is Campus Pastor at Goshen College and also taught there as Assistant Professor of Youth Ministry for eleven years. He has served in ministry for more than twenty years in congregational, camp, conference, and college settings. Bob is editor of A History of Mennonite Youth Ministry, 1885-2005 (2013) and Youth Ministry at a Crossroads (2011). Margaret Alexiou's The Ritual Lament in Greek Tradition, first published in 1974, has long since been established as a classic in several fields. This is the only generic and diachronic study of learned and popular lament and its socio-cultural contexts throughout Greek tradition in which a great diversity of sources are integrated to offer a comprehensive and penetrating synthesis. Its interdisciplinary orientation and broad scope have rendered The Ritual Lament in Greek Tradition an indispensable reference work for classicists, byzantinists, neohellenists, folklorists, and anthropologists.
