In this volume, the authors bring fresh approaches to the subject of royal and noble households in medieval and early modern Europe. The essays focus on the people of the highest social rank: the nuclear and extended royal family, their household attendants, noblemen and noblewomen as courtiers, and physicians. Themes include financial and administrative management, itinerant households, the household of an imprisoned noblewoman, blended households, and cultural influence. The essays are grounded in sources such as records of court ceremonial, economic records, letters, legal records, wills, and inventories. The authors employ a variety of methods, including prosopography, economic history, visual analysis, network analysis, and gift exchange, and the collection is engaged with current political, sociological, anthropological, gender, and feminist theories.

During the Middle Ages, rulers from different regions aspired to an idea of imperial hegemony. On the other hand, there were rulers who deliberately refused to be «emperors», although their reign showed characteristics of imperial rule. The contributions in this volume ask for the reasons why some rulers such as Charlemagne strove for imperial titles, whereas others voluntarily shrank from them. They also look at the characteristics of and rituals connected to imperial rule as well as to the way Medieval empires saw themselves. Thus, the authors in this volume adopt a transcultural perspective, covering Western, Eastern, Northern and Southern Europe, Byzantium and the Middle East. Furthermore, they go beyond the borders of Christianity by including various caliphates and Islamic «hegemonic» rulers like Saladin.

In der neueren Imperiengeschichte wurden Imperien häufig unter dem Gesichtspunkt des Verhältnisses zwischen Zentrum und Peripherien in den Blick genommen. Aus dieser Perspektive beruhen imperiale Ordnungen in der Praxis unter anderem auf dem asymmetrischen Austausch zwischen dem Herrschaftszentrum und davon abhängigen, in unterschiedlichem Intensitätsgrad beherrschten Gebieten. Für die Vermittlung zwischen Zentrum und Peripherie entscheidend sind Eliten, deren Angehörige Inhaber bestimmter, mitunter zeitlich befristeter, Ämter sein können, die aber auch durch Herkunft und Tradition Anspruch auf elitäre Positionen erheben. Der Zugriff der imperialen Zentrale auf Angehörige verschiedener Elitegruppen gestaltet sich dabei durchaus unterschiedlich; die Erfolgschancen solcher Zugriffsmöglichkeiten können entscheidend für den Fortbestand imperialer Ordnungen sein. Der Band untersucht aus dieser Perspektive imperiale Ordnungen in Europa, im Nahen Osten, in Indien und in China in der Zeit zwischen der römischen und sasanidischen Spätantike und dem ausgehenden Mittelalter. Die Beiträge verdeutlichen Mechanismen der Herrschaftsstabilisierung vor dem Hintergrund unterschiedlicher sozialer, kultureller und religiöser Voraussetzungen.

Delogu examines how biographical writings on kings contributed to nascent ideas of nationhood, exerted pressure upon traditional ideals of kingship, and ultimately redefined the theoretical and practical bases of medieval kingship.
