Abstract

Satellite communication systems are now a major part of most telecommunications networks as well as our everyday lives through mobile personal communication systems and broadcast television. A sound understanding of such systems is therefore important for a wide range of system designers, engineers and users. This book provides a comprehensive review of some applications that have driven this growth. It analyzes various aspects of Satellite Communications from Antenna design, Real Time applications, Quality of Service (QoS), Atmospheric effects, Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Networks, Sensor Networks and High Capacity Satellite Links. It is the desire of the authors that the topics selected for the book can give the reader an overview of the current trends in Satellite Systems, and also an in depth analysis of the technical aspects of each one of them.

Abstract

Whether you are a technical or management professional, you can turn to this highly understandable and comprehensive overview of satellite technology, applications, and management. Thoroughly updated and expanded, this third edition boasts a wealth of new material, including added coverage of systems engineering as applied to satellite communications, clear explanations of all aspects of building and using a satellite systems, and discussions on digital communications and processing in modern satellite networks. The new edition also examines critical success factors and how to avoid the pitfalls in selecting satellite and ground resources. The book covers all the fundamentals of satellites, ground control systems, and earth stations, considering the design and operation of each major segment. You gain a practical understanding of the basic construction and usage of commercial satellite networks-how parts of a satellite system function, how various components interact, which role each component plays, and which factors are the most critical to success. Moreover, the book explores the economic, legal, and management issues involved in running the business of satellite communications.

Abstract

Resource Management in Satellite Networks: Optimization and Cross-Layer Design addresses the emergent research area of cross-layer air interface design for satellite systems. A detailed analysis of cross-layer methods is presented along with new analytical and simulation results demonstrating that these techniques can assures high QoS levels for differentiated traffic classes. The research presented integrates the expertise of a wide range of researchers, and addresses all aspects of system design (e.g., propagation issues, resource management techniques, link design, QoS, transport protocols, etc.). Of particular importance is the inclusion of research applicable to both fixed and mobile satellite systems. Resource Management in Satellite Networks: Optimization and Cross-Layer Design is based on the work of the SatNEx Network of Excellence. Since its inception in January 2004, SatNEx has focused on the investigation of cross-layer design issues, which have since emerged to form a distinct field of research. More than 14 partner organizations and institutions participated in this research. This book will serve as a reference for systems engineers and satellite network engineers as well as researchers and graduate students in the field of satellite communications.

Abstract

Without a doubt, understanding what we must do to save our home, our planet, and how we are to do it is of the gravest importance for the present generation and the next. Clearly, advances won through space technology and applications of the same to the study of Earth play an excellent and vital role in classification and interpretation of the processes taking place on the Earth and in space. Today, space technology helps us understand Earth and how we can support and manage its state, to keep it in working condition under the current circumstances. How can we do this? Obviously, we must use appropriate methods and instruments to collect the information we need. In the meantime, it is necessary to develop systems to analyze and process the data collected.
