Abstract

Linear algebra is now included in the undergraduate curriculum of most universities. It is generally recognized that this branch of algebra, being less abstract and directly motivated by geometry, is easier to understand than some other branches and that because of the wide applications it should be taught as soon as possible. This book is an extension of the lecture notes for a course in algebra and geometry for first-year undergraduates of mathematics and physical sciences.

Abstract

This book provides a self-contained introduction to diagram geometry.  Tight connections with group theory are shown. It treats thin geometries (related to Coxeter groups) and thick buildings from a diagrammatic perspective. Projective and affine geometry are main examples.  Polar geometry is motivated by polarities on diagram geometries and the complete classification of those polar geometries whose projective planes are Desarguesian is given. It differs from Tits' comprehensive treatment in that it uses Veldkamp's embeddings. The book intends to be a basic reference for those who study diagram geometry.  Group theorists will find examples of the use of diagram geometry.  Light on matroid theory is shed from the point of view of geometry with linear diagrams.  Those interested in Coxeter groups and those interested in buildings will find brief but self-contained introductions into these topics from the diagrammatic perspective.  Graph theorists will find many highly regular graphs. The text is written so graduate students will be able to follow the arguments without needing recourse to further literature. A strong point of the book is the density of examples.  .

Abstract

Affine geometry and quadrics are fascinating subjects alone, but they are also important applications of linear algebra. They give a first glimpse into the world of algebraic geometry yet they are equally relevant to a wide range of disciplines such as engineering. This text discusses and classifies affinities and Euclidean motions culminating in classification results for quadrics. A high level of detail and generality is a key feature unmatched by other books available. Such intricacy makes this a particularly accessible teaching resource as it requires no extra time in deconstructing the author’s reasoning. The provision of a large number of exercises with hints will help students to develop their problem solving skills and will also be a useful resource for lecturers when setting work for independent study. Affinities, Euclidean Motions and Quadrics takes rudimentary, and often taken-for-granted, knowledge and presents it in a new, comprehensive form. Standard and non-standard examples are demonstrated throughout and an appendix provides the reader with a summary of advanced linear algebra facts for quick reference to the text. All factors combined, this is a self-contained book ideal for self-study that is not only foundational but unique in its approach.’ This text will be of use to lecturers in linear algebra and its applications to geometry as well as advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students.

Abstract

Abstract

The main focus of this volume is on the problem of describing the automorphism groups of affine and projective varieties, a classical subject in algebraic geometry where, in both cases, the automorphism group is often infinite dimensional. The collection covers a wide range of topics and is intended for researchers in the fields of classical algebraic geometry and birational geometry (Cremona groups) as well as affine geometry with an emphasis on algebraic group actions and automorphism groups. It presents original research and surveys and provides a valuable overview of the current state of the art in these topics. Bringing together specialists from projective, birational algebraic geometry and affine and complex algebraic geometry, including Mori theory and algebraic group actions, this book is the result of ensuing talks and discussions from the conference “Groups of Automorphisms in Birational and Affine Geometry” held in October 2012, at the CIRM, Levico Terme, Italy. The talks at the conference highlighted the close connections between the above-mentioned areas and promoted the exchange of knowledge and methods from adjacent fields.

Abstract

The present volume grew out of an international conference on affine algebraic geometry held in Osaka, Japan during 3-6 March 2011 and is dedicated to Professor Masayoshi Miyanishi on the occasion of his 70th birthday. It contains 16 refereed articles in the areas of affine algebraic geometry, commutative algebra and related fields, which have been the working fields of Professor Miyanishi for almost 50 years. Readers will be able to find recent trends in these areas too. The topics contain both algebraic and analytic, as well as both affine and projective, problems. All the results treated in

Abstract

In these notes, first published in 1980, Professor Northcott provides a self-contained introduction to the theory of affine algebraic groups for mathematicians with a basic knowledge of communicative algebra and field theory. The book divides into two parts. The first four chapters contain all the geometry needed for the second half of the book which deals with affine groups. Alternatively the first part provides a sure introduction to the foundations of algebraic geometry. Any affine group has an associated Lie algebra. In the last two chapters, the author studies these algebras and shows how, in certain important cases, their properties can be transferred back to the groups from which they arose. These notes provide a clear and carefully written introduction to algebraic geometry and algebraic groups.

Abstract

We examine Levi non-degenerate tube hypersurfaces in complex linear space which are "spherical," that is, locally CR-equivalent to the real hyperquadric. Spherical hypersurfaces are characterized by the condition of the vanishing of the CR-curvature form, so such hypersurfaces are flat from the CR-geometric viewpoint. On the other hand, such hypersurfaces are also of interest from the point of view of affine geometry. Thus our treatment of spherical tube hypersurfaces in this book is two-fold: CR-geometric and affine-geometric. As the book shows, spherical tube hypersurfaces possess remarkable properties. For example, every such hypersurface is real-analytic and extends to a closed real-analytic spherical tube hypersurface in complex space. One of our main goals is to provide an explicit affine classification of closed spherical tube hypersurfaces whenever possible. In this book we offer a comprehensive exposition of the theory of spherical tube hypersurfaces, starting with the idea proposed in the pioneering work by P. Yang (1982) and ending with the new approach put forward by G. Fels and W. Kaup (2009).

Abstract

Random variables are rarely independent in practice and so many multivariate distributions have been proposed in the literature to give a dependence structure for two or more variables. In this book, we restrict ourselves to the bivariate distributions for two reasons: (i) correlation structure and other properties are easier to understand and the joint density plot can be displayed more easily, and (ii) a bivariate distribution can normally be extended to a multivariate one through a vector or matrix representation. This volume is a revision of Chapters 1-17 of the previous book Continuous Bivariate Distributions, Emphasising Applications authored by Drs. Paul Hutchinson and Chin-Diew Lai. The book updates the subject of copulas which have grown immensely during the past two decades. Similarly, conditionally specified distributions and skewed distributions have become important topics of discussion in this area of research. This volume, which provides an up-to-date review of various developments relating to bivariate distributions in general, should be of interest to academics and graduate students, as well as applied researchers in finance, economics, science, engineering and technology. N. BALAKRISHNAN is Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He has published numerous research articles in many areas of probability and statistics and has authored a number of books including the four-volume series on Distributions in Statistics, jointly with Norman L. Johnson and S. Kotz, published by Wiley. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the Editor-in-Chief of Communications in Statistics and the Executive Editor of Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference. CHIN-DIEW LAI holds a Personal Chair in Statistics at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed research articles and co-authored three well-received books. He was a former editor-in-chief and is now an Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Mathematics and Decision Sciences. .

Abstract

Changing interest rates constitute one of the major risk sources for banks, insurance companies, and other financial institutions. Modeling the term-structure movements of interest rates is a challenging task. This volume gives an introduction to the mathematics of term-structure models in continuous time. It includes practical aspects for fixed-income markets such as day-count conventions, duration of coupon-paying bonds and yield curve construction; arbitrage theory; short-rate models; the Heath-Jarrow-Morton methodology; consistent term-structure parametrizations; affine diffusion processes and option pricing with Fourier transform; LIBOR market models; and credit risk. The focus is on a mathematically straightforward but rigorous development of the theory. Students, researchers and practitioners will find this volume very useful. Each chapter ends with a set of exercises, that provides source for homework and exam questions. Readers are expected to be familiar with elementary Itô calculus, basic probability theory, and real and complex analysis.
