Until some thirty years ago, medieval scholars and historians of philosophy have not generally done justice to Walter Burley (ca. 1275-after 1344). On the one hand, he was been misconstrued as holding a mere variation of more moderate realist positions – something that is true only for the first part of his career (before 1324). On the other hand, very often his ideas were studied simply as a means to a better understanding Ockham’s theories, so dwarfing the worth and interest of Burley’s doctrines. On the contrary, in terms of rigour, originality, and influence, Burley was one of the most prominent logicians and metaphysicians of the Middle Ages. This volume, which contains thirteen substantial essays on Burley's philosophy, tries to rectify that situation. It aims to reconstruct Burley’s thought and the role it played in the development of late medieval philosophy, to situate it definitely within its historical and intellectual context, and to clarify its internal evolution. Contributors include: Fabrizio Amerini, E. Jennifer Ashworth, Laurent Cesalli, Alessandro D. Conti, Iacopo Costa, Catarina Dutilh Novaes, Marek Gensler, Elżbieta Jung, Roberto Lambertini, Cecilia Trifogli, Marta Vittorini, and Hans-Ulrich Wöhler.

Is it rational to be moral? Can moral disputes be settled rationally? Which criteria determine what we have a good reason to do? In this innovative book, Logi Gunnarsson takes issue with the assumption made by many philosophers faced with the problem of reconciling moral norms with a scientific world view, namely that morality must be offered a non-moral justification based on a formal concept of rationality. He argues that the criteria for the rationality of an action are irreducibly substantive, rather than purely formal, and that assuming that morality must be given a non-moral justification amounts to a distortion of both rationality and morality. His discussion includes substantial critical engagement with major thinkers from two very different philosophical traditions, and is notable for its clear and succinct account of Habermas' discourse ethics. It will appeal to anyone interested in practical reason and the rational credentials of morality.

Polymorphous Domesticities maps out the play of gender, sexuality, and alternative forms of domesticity in the works of four modern European and American writers-Edith Wharton, Djuna Barnes, Colette, and J. R. Ackerley. What these four writers have in common is a defiance of patriarchal paradigms in their lives as well as in their works. Not only did they live outside the norms of the heterosexual family unit, they also pursued and wrote about alternative lifestyles that prominently involved animals. Through close readings from a feminist perspective, Juliana Schiesari reconfigures the ways in which interspecies relationships inflect domestic spheres, reading the "Other" through the lens of gender, home, and family. As she explores how domestic life is refigured by the presence of animals, Schiesari challenges anthropocentric frames of reference and brings the very definition of "human" into question.

"In a pioneering study of the three best-known French women writers of the twentieth century, Bethany Ladimer examines the ways in which the aging process shaped their creativity and their lives. Simone de Beauvoir, Colette, and Marguerite Duras all lived long lives and were prolific writers until the end. Ladimer's developmental approach to their creativity takes into account literary analysis and also discusses their work and lives from the standpoint of history and the social sciences, a conjunction that considers age, gender, and a culture that depends on the ideas of sexual difference for its national identity. She incorporates the work of Betty Friedan, Carolyn Heilbrun, and Margaret Gulette, among others, into her study."--Jacket.
