Abstract

This book presents the frontier research of toxicology and health risk assessment of chemicals. First, it provides an overview of the current methods of evaluating safety amounts of chemicals and provides a new aspect of the principle of toxicology. Secondly, it shows recent research where the new method of health risk evaluation is adopted, followed by an integrated health risk assessment of chemicals. Finally, it describes the epigenetic inheritance of chemical impact on health throughout several generations. Estimating the safety amount of chemicals surrounding our lives is not sufficient for health risk evaluation, particularly for carcinogenic compounds, endocrine disruptors, and nano materials. The authors group has found a family of chemicals linked to ADHD through animal screening and identified its chemical nature using chemoinformatics methods. Based on these new developments, this book proposes to utilize the biomarker common to those chemicals for health risk assessment, independent of exposure routes and physiological dimensions. The book appeals to researchers and students in the field of toxicology, health risk assessment, pharmacology, and public health.

Abstract

Given the widespread presence of chemical compounds in the environment and their effects on organisms, there is an increasing need to better understand the mechanisms underlying their toxicity. This book brings together 13 chapters on a variety of topics from different areas of research in environmental pollutants toxicology. While it illustrates the toxic effects of several environmental contaminants on humans and the biota, it also introduces methodologies for assessing environmental contamination as well as remediation techniques.

Abstract

Mangroves are considered the "wonder flora" distributed in the tropics, subtropics, and warm temperate latitudes. Aside from protecting the coastal marine communities, mangroves also serve as a haven for aquatic and terrestrial fauna, actively participate in energy dynamics, recycle nutrients, filter waste, and support the livelihood of coastal communities. This makes the mangrove ecosystem crucial to the well-being of the planet. This book, written by experts, provides invaluable insights into mangroves of the Niger Delta, the relationship between mangrove recruitment and thrombolytic development, deforestation and sustainability, mangrove health assessment, ecosystem-based coastal protection, and conservation through ecotourism. This book on mangrove biology, ecosystem, and conservation is an invaluable resource for every mangrove enthusiast.

Abstract

The Sachdeva family is like many others. A father with a government job; his wife a homemaker; a son starting a career; and a daughter in high school. And like most other families in a big city, the Sachdevas are surrounded in their everyday lives by a cocktail of toxic substances they are hardly aware of. Following these four-and some others who come in and out of their circle of existence- 'Our Toxic World' takes a close look at these hidden perils, and at what we can do to make our own lives, and the world around us, a little cleaner, a little safer.
