Abstract

This book contains a collection of the main contributions from the third edition of the NICFD conference, organized by the Special Interest Group on Non-Ideal Compressible Fluid Dynamics (SIG-49). It provides insight on the latest research findings in the field of NICFD that are relevant to a number of engineering applications related to the conversion of renewable and waste energy sources, like organic Rankine cycles, supercritical CO2 cycle power plants, combustors operating with supercritical fluids, and heat pumps. The various chapters of the book document research encompassing theoretical, computational, and experimental aspects of the gas dynamics of non-ideal reactive and non-reactive flows and their impact for the design of internal flow components (turbomachinery, heat exchangers, combustors). Since the accurate calculation of fluid thermo-physical properties is of great concern in NICFD, all the chapters address this problem by describing state-of-the-art models for the characterization of the properties of pure fluids and mixtures.

Abstract

This book aims to show how hemodynamic numerical models based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can be developed. An approach to Fluid Mechanics is made from a historical point of view focusing on the Navier-Stokes Equations and a fluid-mechanical description of blood flow. Finally, the techniques most used to visualize cardiac flows and validate numerical models are detailed, paying special attention to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in case of an in vivo validation and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) for an in vitro validation.

Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive description of numerical methods and validation processes for predicting transitional flows based on the Langtry–Menter local correlation-based transition model, integrated with both one-equation Spalart–Allmaras (S–A) and two-equation Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence models. A comparative study is presented to combine the respective merits of the two coupling methods in the context of predicting the boundary-layer transition phenomenon from fundamental benchmark flows to realistic helicopter rotors. The book will of interest to industrial practitioners working in aerodynamic design and the analysis of fixed-wing or rotary wing aircraft, while also offering advanced reading material for graduate students in the research areas of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), turbulence modeling and related fields.

Abstract

This book details science of hypersonics especially focusing on propulsion aspects such as supersonic combustion ramjets and their applications, and also includes lift and drag in hypersonic flight and their mathematical and physical explanation. It provides charts and data from hypersonic testing and measurements from actual vehicles and engines built in the past. Criteria to dimension hypersonic powered and unpowered vehicles (gliders) based on fundamental fluid dynamics and backed by flight testing; criteria to preliminary sizing vehicles and preliminary dimensioning of supersonic combustors are introduced. The book will serve better theoretical understanding of drag, lift and how to apply them to the design of hypersonic vehicles, as well as data to size vehicles and supersonic combustion ramjet (SCRJ) systems. This book will be a useful reference for researchers and designers in hypersonic vehicles but also second or third-year graduate students.

Abstract

This book gathers the proceedings of the 12th instalment in the bi-annual Workshop series on Direct and Large Eddy Simulation (DLES), which began in 1994 and focuses on modern techniques used to simulate turbulent flows based on the partial or full resolution of the instantaneous turbulent flow structure. With the rapidly expanding capacities of modern computers, this approach has attracted more and more interest over the years and will undoubtedly be further enhanced and applied in the future. Hybrid modelling techniques based on a combination of LES and RANS approaches also fall into this category and are covered as well. The goal of the Workshop was to share the state of the art in DNS, LES and related techniques for the computation and modelling of turbulent and transitional flows. The respective papers highlight the latest advances in the prediction, understanding and control of turbulent flows in academic and industrial applications.

Abstract

This book explores the dynamics of planetary and stellar fluid layers, including atmospheres, oceans, iron cores, and convective and radiative zones in stars, describing the different theoretical, computational and experimental methods used to study these problems in fluid mechanics, including the advantages and limitations of each method for different problems. This scientific domain is by nature interdisciplinary and multi-method, but while much effort has been devoted to solving open questions within the various fields of mechanics, applied mathematics, physics, earth sciences and astrophysics, and while much progress has been made within each domain using theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches, cross-fertilizations have remained marginal. Going beyond the state of the art, the book provides readers with a global introduction and an up-to-date overview of relevant studies, fully addressing the wide range of disciplines and methods involved. The content builds on the CISM course “Fluid mechanics of planets and stars”, held in April 2018, which was part of the research project FLUDYCO, supported by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.

Abstract

This textbook provides an excellent resource for engineering and science students to develop basic, intermediate and advanced level skills in hydraulics, hydrology and environmental engineering. Topics include open channel flow, ocean waves, kinematic wave modelling, flood forecasting, groundwater production, evapotranspiration, rainfall runoff modelling, cost benefit analysis, environmental evaluation, air quality control, carbon capture and storage, atmospheric dispersion, water pollution, water treatment, wastewater treatment, environmental impact assessment and uncertainty management. Hydrology and environmental engineering are treated as clear extensions of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing between theoretical and empirical results. Written challenges are specified throughout the text to help readers derive important theoretical results for themselves. Each chapter includes a set of related practical problems with detailed worked solutions, many of which include short, self-contained MATLAB codes. The book provides a wealth of theoretical and practical exercises to aid teachers in planning innovative learning experiences for their students in class and at home. The book also offers a rich environment for students and researchers to practice mathematics and learn about the art of deriving analytical solutions in an environmental engineering context.

Abstract

This book offers a concise and practical survey of the principles governing compressible flows, along with selected applications. It starts with derivation of the time-dependent, three-dimensional equation of compressible potential flows, and a study of weak waves, including evaluation of the sound speed in gases. The following chapter addresses quasi-one-dimensional flows, the study of normal shock waves, and flow in ducts with constant cross section subjected to friction and/or heat transfer. It also investigates the effects of friction and heat transfer in ducts with variable cross section. The chapter ends by pointing to the analogy between one-dimensional compressible flows and open channel hydraulics. Further, the book discusses supersonic flows, including the study of oblique shock waves, and supersonic flows over corners and wedges. It also examines Riemann problems, numerical resolution of the wave equation, and of nonlinear hyperbolic problems, including propagation of strong waves. A subsequent chapter focuses on the small perturbation theory of subsonic, transonic and supersonic flows around slender bodies aligned or almost aligned to the uniform inflow. In particular, it explores subsonic and supersonic flows over a wavy wall. Lastly, an appendix with a short derivation of the Fluid Mechanics basic equations is included. The final chapter addresses the problem of transonic flows where both subsonic and supersonic are present. Lastly, an appendix with a short derivation of the Fluid Mechanics basic equations is included. Illustrated with several practical examples, this book is a valuable tool to understand the most fundamental mathematical principles of compressible flows. Graduate Mathematics, Physics and Engineering students as well as researchers with an interest in the aerospace sciences benefit from this work.
