Abstract

"Still Living the Edges: A Disabled Women's Reader is a follow up to Diane Driedger's 2010 anthology, Living the Edges: A Disabled Women's Reader. Ten years after the publication of the first book, the lives of women with disabilities have not changed much, as disabled women still face discrimination because they are women and because they are disabled. Still Living the Edges is an international reader that features articles, poetry, essays and visual art from women with various disabilities, from nations such as Canada, United States, Australia, Russia, United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe. Disabled women are still on the edges, whether that be on the cutting edge, being pushed to the edges of society or challenging the edges, the barriers in their way. This collection brings together the diverse voices of women with various disabilities, both physical and mental. Disabled women write about their experiences with violence, employment, relationships, body image, sexuality and family life, society's attitudes, and physical, sexual and emotional abuse. They also talk about the challenges of navigating inaccessible environments, both physical and attitudinal. They explore their identity as women with various disabilities --mental and physical. In the last section of Still Living the Edges, disabled women write about how they are challenging the physical and attitudinal barriers that exclude them from society." -- Publisher

Abstract

Mixing rigorous social theory with concrete analysis, Reading and Writing Disability Differently unpacks the marginality of disabled people by addressing how the meaning of our bodily existence is configured in everyday literate society.Tanya Titchkosky begins by illustrating how news media and policy texts reveal dominant Western ways of constituting the meaning of people, and the meaning of problems, as they relate to our understandings of the embodied self. Her goal is to configure disability as something more than a problem, and beyond simply a positive or a negative, and to treat texts on disability as potential sites to examine neo-liberal culture. Titchkosky holds that through an exploration of the potential behind limited representations of disability, we can relate to disability as a meaningful form of resistance to the restricted normative order of contemporary embodiment.Incorporating a textual analysis of ordinary depictions of disability, this innovative study promises to represent embodied differences in new ways and alter our imaginative relations to the politics of the body.

Abstract

The passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 was hailed as revolutionary legislation, but in the ensuing years restrictive Supreme Court decisions have prompted accusations that the Court has betrayed the disability rights movement. The ADA can lay claim to notable successes, yet people with disabilities continue to be unemployed at extremely high rates. In this timely book, Samuel R. Bagenstos examines the history of the movement and discusses the various, often-conflicting projects of diverse participants. He argues that while the courts deserve some criticism, some may also be fairly aimed at the choices made by prominent disability rights activists as they crafted and argued for the ADA. The author concludes with an assessment of the limits of antidiscrimination law in integrating and empowering people with disabilities, and he suggests new policy directions to make these goals a reality.

Abstract

"This Ability is Cotter's third book in a series dealing with discrimination law. Having looked at the theme of 'gender discrimination' in Gender Injustice and 'race discrimination' in Race Matters, this further installment takes a similar approach and structure to illustrate comparisons and contradictions in discrimination law. Disability Law is an increasingly important area in combating disability discrimination. This Ability provides readers with a better understanding of the issue of inequality and aims to increase the likelihood of achieving equality at both the national and international levels for those with disabilities while at the same time educating those without disabilities. The work examines the primary role of legislation and its impact on the court process. It also discusses the two most important trade agreements of our day - namely the North American Free Trade Agreement and the European Union Treaty - in a historical and compelling analysis of discrimination. By providing a detailed examination of the relationship between disability issues and the law, this book will be an important read for those concerned with equality."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

This updated and expanded new edition continues the theme of the first edition of emphasizing the struggles in which persons with disabilities have engaged, the barriers they have had to overcome, and the barriers they continue to face in their quest to obtain freedom. A major point is that disabilities are a part of life and everyone has limitations, therefore, persons with disabilities should be treated the same as any other human. The disability rights movement and its role in placing the demands of persons with disabilities before American society are discussed. Legislative action that imp
