This is the first book to look at an increasingly popular form of street art: the paste-up or ""wheatie."" Many street artists don't graffiti or stencil any more but use pre-prepared paper images that can be taken down, thereby avoiding a vandalism charge. The book shows the work of 20 artists, with photographs of their work, an article about their work, and a fold-out paste-up. The fold-out pages are perforated so they can easily be removed. Some of the paste-ups are laser cut with attaching tags so they can be popped out. There's also an introductory interview with cult street artists Sten &

The first appearances of graffiti "tags" (signatures) on New York City subway trains in the early 1970's were discarded as incidents of vandalism or the rough, violent cries of the ignorant and impoverished. However, as the graffiti movement progressed and tags became more elaborate and ubiquitous, genuine artists emerged whose unique creativity and unconventional media captured the attention of the world.Featuring gallery and street works by several contributors to the graffiti scene, this book offers insight into the lives of urban artists, describes their relationship with the bourgeois art

Based on an in-depth ethnographic study working with some of the world's most influential Independent Public Artists, this book takes a completely new approach. Placing these illicit aesthetic practices within a broader historical, political, and aesthetic context, it argues that they are in fact both intrinsically ornamental (working within a classic architectonic framework), as well as innately ordered (within a highly ritualized, performative structure). Rather than disharmonic, destructive forms, rather than ones solely working within the dynamics of the market, these insurgent images are
