Abstract

"Emphasizes the ways in which innovative American poets have blended art and activism, focusing on aesthetic experiments and investigations of ethnic, racial, and gender subjectivities. Rather than consider poetry as a thing apart, or as a tool for asserting identity, this volume's poets create spaces, forms, and modes for entering the public sphere, contesting injustices, and reimagining the contemporary" --

However, the idea that Stevens lived a double life, the author maintains, is misleading. This compelling book uncovers what Stevens liked to think of as his ""ordinary"" life, a life in which the demands of politics, economics, poetry, and everyday distractions coexisted, sometimes peacefully and sometimes not. Examining the full scope of Stevens's career (from

Abstract

Examining the modernist poetics of Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot, this study traces their influence on the current crisis in post-structuralist literary theory. The author reveals a continuity between that theory and high modernism's tendency towards fascism.
