This volume explores theoretical discourses in which religion is used to legitimize political violence. It examines the ways in which Christianity and Islam are utilized for political ends, in particular how violence is used (or abused) as an expedient to justify political action. This research focuses on premodern as well as contemporary discourses in the Middle East and Latin America, identifying patterns frequently used to justify the deployment of violence in both hegemonic and anti-hegemonic discourses. In addition, it explores how premodern arguments and authorities are utilized and transformed in order to legitimize contemporary violence as well as the ways in which the use of religion as a means to justify violence alters the nature of conflicts that are not otherwise explicitly religious. It argues that most past and present conflicts, even if the discourses about them are conducted in religious terms, have origins other than religion and/or blend religion with other causes, namely socio-economic and political injustice and inequality. Understanding the use and abuse of religion to justify violence is a prerequisite to discerning the nature of a conflict and might thus contribute to conflict resolution.

"Editors Weismann and Malik have done a fabulous service by compiling this collection of timely essays about the place of da'wa, or "proselytization," in modern, globalized Islam. The authors and editors define and problematize the term carefully and lay out the need for a work such as this. At a time when much Western media is myopically focused on extremism and the more violent manifestations of global jihad, the Islamic world is fundamentally and simply more concerned with proselytization. The contributors represent a variety of approaches and come from a wide range of academic, religious, and national background, which will lend significantly to the credibility of this work"--

Examines how violence was described and evaluated in the foundational texts of Islam. How was violence justified in early Islam? What role did violent actions play in the formation and maintenance of the Muslim political order? How did Muslim thinkers view the origins and acceptability of violence? These questions are addressed by an international range of eminent authors through both general accounts of types of violence and detailed case studies of violent acts drawn from the early Islamic sources. Violence is understood widely, to include jihad, state repressions and rebellions, and also more personally directed violence against victims (women, animals, children, slaves) and criminals. By understanding the early development of Muslim thinking around violence, our comprehension of subsequent trends in Islamic thought, during the medieval period and up to the modern day, become clearer.Key Features: Examines the portrayal of violence in a variety of different intellectual contexts * Takes a broad understanding of violence - from warfare between Muslims (and between Muslims and others) to individual acts of violence * Enables a better informed debate about the nature of violence in early Islam * Includes contributions from leading international experts including Michael Cooperson, Maribel Fierro, Geert Jan van Gelder, Christopher Melchert, John Nawas, Andrew Rippin and Dominique Urvoy
