Abstract

The last 30 years have seen a revived interest in Henry of Ghent, one of the leading theologians at the University of Paris in the last quarter of the 13th century. This volume offers a new and comprehensive study of a central aspect of Henry’s philosophical thought: his understanding of metaphysics. The study examines why, according to Henry, there has to be a science investigating being qua being and how such an inquiry is at all possible. In Henry’s conception, metaphysics is not just one scientific discipline among others but the first and fundamental one for it deals with the first object of the intellect as its subject-matter. The recognition of this understanding, as the present study intends to show, opens a new perspective on the proper philosophical dimension of Henry of Ghent’s thought.

Abstract

Meister Eckhart spent some twenty years in the Dominican convent in Erfurt, first as prior and then as first provincial of the order's province of Saxonia. Although in recent years the great significance of Meister Eckhart's time in Erfurt, between the periods he spent in Paris, has become increasingly more evident, Eckhart research has on the whole devoted less attention to his years in Erfurt than to his time in Paris, Strasbourg and Cologne. The present volume addresses the need for more research into Eckhart's time in Erfurt. The 27 papers address the most important trends in recent research into Eckhart and inquire into the consequences these have for our assessment of Meister Eckhart.

Abstract

Francis M. Rogers, to whom the current volume is in honor of, may be a modest man in principle, but not in his academic pursuits. To call his interests broad in scope is no exaggeration as they cover the fields of linguistics, literature, philology, bibliography, travel narratives and celestial navigation, which is nicely reflected in this volume. Part I concerns general and Luso-Brazilian linguistics (Bernard H. Bichakjian, John B. Jensen, Anthony J. Naro, Joseph M. Piel, Cléa Rameh); Part II Medieval studies: Sheila R. Ackerlind, Donald Stone Jr., Paolo Valesio, Joan B. Williamson<

Abstract

Around the year 1215, female mystics and their sacramental devotion were among orthodoxy's most sophisticated weapons in the fight against heresy. Holy women's claims to be in direct communication with God placed them in positions of unprecedented influence. Yet by the end of the Middle Ages female mystics were frequently mistrusted, derided, and in danger of their lives. The witch hunts were just around the corner. While studies of sanctity and heresy tend to be undertaken separately, Proving Woman brings these two avenues of inquiry together by associating the downward trajectory of holy women with medieval society's progressive reliance on the inquisitional procedure. Inquisition was soon used for resolving most questions of proof. It was employed for distinguishing saints and heretics; it underwrote the new emphasis on confession in both sacramental and judicial spheres; and it heralded the reintroduction of torture as a mechanism for extracting proof through confession. As women were progressively subjected to this screening, they became ensnared in the interlocking web of proofs. No aspect of female spirituality remained untouched. Since inquisition determined the need for tangible proofs, it even may have fostered the kind of excruciating illnesses and extraordinary bodily changes associated with female spirituality. In turn, the physical suffering of holy women became tacit support for all kinds of earthly suffering, even validating temporal mechanisms of justice in their most aggressive forms. The widespread adoption of inquisitional mechanisms for assessing female spirituality eventuated in a growing confusion between the saintly and heretical and the ultimate criminalization of female religious expression.
