Here, for the first time in English, all aspects of Hugo's work are represented in a single volume. Famous scenes from Notre-Dame, Les Miserables, and The Toilers of the Sea are included, as well as excerpts from Hugo's intimate diaries, poems of love and loss, and scathing denunciations of the political establishment. The poems appear in bilingual form, and much of the material is appearing in English for the first time. - ;'To the English, I am "shocking"...What's more, French, which is disgus

"Esteemed in France as the leading writer of Romantic dramas, Victor Hugo created a body of work that revolutionized the dramatic canon of his time. In this book, Albert W. Halsall presents the first complete treatment in English of Hugo's plays." "This synthesis offers a history, plot summary, and detailed analysis of all the dramas, from Cromwell and Torquemada to the juvenilia and the epic melodrama Les Burgraves. Particular attention is given to Hugo's practical experiments in staging his own plays, which he nearly always directed himself in the 1830s. Also documented are the receptions accorded to Hugo's dramas, from the battle that greeted Hernani in 1830 to Richard Eyre's 1996 production of Le Roi s'amuse at London's Royal National Theatre, which pointed to the sexual high jinks among the royals of the period."--Jacket.

This generous, varied selection of poems by one of France's best-loved and most reviled poets is presented with facing originals, detailed notes, and a lively introduction to the author's life and work. Steven Monte presents more than eighty poems in translation and in the original French, taken from the earliest poetic publications of the 1820's, through collections published during exile, to works published in the years following Hugo's death in 1883. The introduction provides helpful background information about Hugo's life and work, the selection, and what is involved in translatin

My Beloved Toto, a collection of letters written by Juliette Drouet to her lover, Victor Hugo, tells the story of a life and of the great love affair that shaped it. From 1833 until her death half a century later, Drouet wrote to Hugo twice daily on average, resulting in thousands of letters. The 186 translated here—most appearing in English for the first time—offer insights into nineteenth-century French culture as well as an insider's look at the character, behavior, working habits, and day-to-day life of France's most monumental man of letters.

Reassessing the theoretical usefulness of the "high/low culture" perspective often found in writings on Romantic theater, this book shows how this dichotomy has obscured the centrality of melodrama as a dominant mode of Romantic expression in post-revolutionary France. The book focuses on Victor Ducange's production (1813-33) in order to reveal melodrama's aesthetic and political contribution to the Romantic movement during the Restoration. The restructuring of the theatrical field after 1830 is analyzed to account for the break between Hugo's Romantic drama and the melodrama and for melodrama
