Ancient funerary poetry tried to portray the deceased in the context of everyday life while employing the expressive techniques of a 'classical' tradition that imparted a sense of splendor. This study systematically explores the relationship of stone epigrams to literary poetry and the range of options and strategies used by the commissioned poets, based on examples with commentary from the Greek East.
