Partition de l’Inde en 1947, partition du Pakistan en 1971, sécessionnisme des Tigres tamouls à Sri Lanka, régionalisme tournant à la lutte armée dans plusieurs États indiens, conflits inter-religieux et divisions sectaires, revendications linguistiques, poussée du nationalisme hindou mais aussi des mouvements de castes : les tensions identitaires ont marqué de leur sceau l’histoire du dernier demi-siècle en Asie du Sud. Récusant l’approche essentialiste qui enferme les hommes et les communautés dans des stéréotypes propices à toutes les manipulations, ce volume souligne comment se construisent, dans un sous-continent extraordinairement divers, les figures de l’identité, et comment elles se croisent dans des superpositions, des enchevêtrements, des glissements d’appartenances. Identités religieuses, culturelles, sociales, politiques, voire économiques ; identités nationales et régionales : c’est à diverses échelles et par des voies multiples — anthropologie, histoire, sociologie, littérature, sciences politiques — que les auteurs de cet ouvrage éclairent les complexes réalités du champ sud-asiatique. Mais en se penchant sur l’Inde, le Pakistan, le Bangladesh, Sri Lanka ou le Népal, ils apportent aussi leur contribution à des débats plus larges sur l’ethnographie coloniale, l’orientalisme, les lectures et usages de l’histoire, les constructions culturelles de l’identité, les pratiques identitaires des communismes asiatiques, la critique post-moderne de l’État-nation et du sécularisme, pour enrichir une problématique majeure qui agite aujourd’hui, à travers un monde dit globalisé, tant les peuples que les intellectuels et les politiques.

Depuis près de vingt ans, l’Inde a changé d’image : les réformes économiques engagées à compter de 1991 et les essais nucléaires de 1998 ont témoigné de sa volonté de s’affirmer comme une puissance émergente. Elle est désormais reconnue comme telle, y compris par la Chine. Après la longue césure de la colonisation et de la guerre froide, le retour de l’Inde dans un continent en mouvement dessine une nouvelle Asie, plus vaste, plus peuplée, plus complexe que la seule Asie orientale. Cette évolution fait naître de nouveaux équilibres sur un échiquier où jouent, entre autres acteurs, l’Inde, la Chine, le Japon, les États-Unis, et les voisins de l’Inde, ceux de l’Asie du Sud comme ceux du « voisinage étendu » qui court du Moyen-Orient à l’Asie du Sud-Est. Ce « grand jeu » contribue à redessiner peu à peu un nouvel ordre mondial, dans lequel les puissances dominantes occidentales doivent apprendre à redéfinir leurs relations avec une Asie nouvelle. En trois étapes qui analysent la « présence du passé », le nouvel échiquier géopolitique et les enjeux économiques de l’Asie en mouvement, cet ouvrage réunissant historiens, économistes et géopolitologues, spécialistes de l’Inde, mais aussi de la Chine, du Japon et de l’Asie du Sud-Est, éclaire de façon inédite les voies multiples par lesquelles l’émergence du pôle indien dynamise l’ensemble de l’Asie et, au-delà, appelle à repenser les relations Nord-Sud. As Voltaire famously opined, Athaliah, Racine’s last play, is “perhaps the greatest masterwork of the human spirit.” Its formidable antagonists, Athaliah, queen of Judah, and Jehoiada, high priest of the temple of Jerusalem, are engaged in a deadly struggle for dominion: she, fiercely determined to maintain her throne and exterminate the detested race of David; he, no less fiercely determined to overthrow this heathen queen and enthrone the orphan Joash, the scion of the house of David, whom Athaliah believes she slew as an infant ten years earlier. This boy represents the sole hope for the survival of the royal race from which is to spring the Christ. But in this play, even God is more about hate and retribution than about love and mercy.This is the fourth volume of a projected translation into English of all twelve of Jean Racine’s plays—only the third time such a project has been undertaken. For this new translation, Geoffrey Alan Argent has rendered these plays in the verse form that Racine might well have used had he been English: namely, the “heroic” couplet. Argent has exploited the couplet’s compressed power and flexibility to produce a work of English literature, a verse drama as gripping in English as Racine’s is in French. Complementing the translation are the illuminating Discussion, intended as much to provoke discussion as to provide it, and the extensive Notes and Commentary, which offer their own fresh and thought-provoking insights.

This is the second volume of a projected translation into English of all twelve of Jean Racine’s plays—only the third time such a project has been undertaken in the three hundred years since Racine’s death. For this new translation, Geoffrey Alan Argent has taken a fresh approach: he has rendered these plays in rhymed “heroic” couplets. While Argent’s translation is faithful to Racine’s text and tone, his overriding intent has been to translate a work of French literature into a work of English literature, substituting for Racine’s rhymed alexandrines (hexameters) the English mode of rhymed iambic pentameters, a verse form particularly well suited to the highly charged urgency of Racine’s drama and the coiled strength of his verse. Complementing the translation are the illuminating Discussion, intended as much to provoke discussion as to provide it, and the extensive Notes and Commentary, which clarify obscure references, explicate the occasional gnarled conceit, and offer their own fresh and thought-provoking insights.Bajazet, Racine’s seventh play, first given in 1672, is based on events that had taken place in the Sultan’s palace in Istanbul a mere thirty years earlier. But the twilit, twisting passageways of the Seraglio merely serve as a counterpart to the dim and errant moral sense of the play’s four protagonists: Bajazet, the Sultan’s brother; Atalide, Bajazet’s secret lover; Roxane, the Sultaness, who is madly in love with Bajazet and dangles over his head the death sentence the Sultan has ordered her to implement in his absence; and Akhmet, the wily, well-intentioned Vizier, who involves them all in an imbroglio in the Seraglio, with disastrous consequences. Unique among Racine’s plays, Bajazet provides no moral framework for either protagonists or audience. We watch as these benighted characters, cut adrift from any moral moorings, with no upright character at hand to serve as an ethical anchor and no religious or societal guidelines to serve as a lifeline, flail, flounder, and finally drag one another down. Here, Racine has presented us with his four most mercilessly observed, most subtly delineated, and most ambiguously fascinating characters. Indeed, Bajazet is certainly Racine’s most undeservedly neglected tragedy.

Les architectures de terre et de bois d’époque romaine étaient, il y a quelques années encore, très mal connues. Des fouilles récentes ont apporté de nombreuses données. Cet ouvrage tente un premier point : s’agit-il de survivances protohistoriques ? comment se présentent ces techniques de construction ? à quelles conditions socio-économiques répondent-elles ? L’approche archéologique et textuelle s’accompagne des enseignements livrés par des expériences contemporaines. Earth and wood constructions of the Roman era were, until several years ago, very little known. Recent excavations have provided us with considerable information. This work attempts to answer primary questions such as : are these protohistorical survivals ? what construction techniques were used ? what socio-economic conditions do they correspond to ? The textual and archaeological approach go along with informationobtained by contemporary experiments.
