Creation is a central theme in Mesopotamian texts. In which contexts were creation texts employed? Using clearly situated sources, the author develops a methodological process for answering this question. Ten famous creation texts are examined in terms of their performance and meaning in Mesopotamian religious practice, thus providing insights into the ritual use of myth. Schöpfung ist ein zentrales Thema in mesopotamischen Texten, das in verschiedenen Textgattungen aus drei Jahrtausenden behandelt wird. Dabei zeigt sich, dass mündliche Darbietung und schriftliche Konkretion solcher Mythen in Mesopotamien gleichermaßen als performativ wirkmächtig angesehen wurden. Der Band entwickelt erstmals eine Methodik für die Rekonstruktion der situativen Verortung von Schöpfungstexten und wendet sie auf konkrete Quellen an. Dabei zeigen sich detaillierte Bezüge zwischen Schöpfungstext und zugehörigem Ritualkontext mit Blick auf Ritualziel, Ritualteilnehmer und Ritualrahmen. Indizien aus Schrift, Sprache, Struktur und Inhalt, eingeschobene Ritualanweisungen im Schöpfungstext und die Rolle von Preisliedern werden untersucht. Zehn berühmte Schöpfungstexte werden so in ihrer Performanz und Bedeutung innerhalb der mesopotamischen religiösen Praxis erschlossen und eröffnen Einblicke in die Verwendung von Schöpfungsmythen innerhalb von Ritualen, insbesondere im Tempelkult. Der theoretisch-methodische Zugang ist für die Erforschung weiterer mythischer Texte relevant und öffnet neue Horizonte für die Tempel-, Ritual- und Mythosforschung.

L’opération de l’armée israélienne à Gaza, fin 2008-début 2009, a causé la mort de plus de 1300 Palestiniens, dont une grande majorité de civils et près de 300 enfants. Quel conditionnement a conduit la société israélienne à accepter de tels massacres ? Quelle perception du conflit la presse internationale, notamment française, a-t-elle contribué à diffuser, dans un contexte où l’accès à la bande de Gaza fut interdit aux journalistes pendant ces vingt-deux jours de bombardements ? Denis Sieffert montre qu’un long travail a été accompli sur l’opinion israélienne et internationale pour « déshumaniser » les Palestiniens de Gaza : Les mensonges sur la responsabilité dans la rupture de la trêve, la « dépolitisation » du Hamas, réduit à un mouvement terroriste, et l’occultation délibérée des effets économiques, sanitaires et humains du blocus imposé par Israël à la population de Gaza ont créé les conditions d’une nouvelle guerre médiatique, inséparable de la stratégie politico-militaire d’Israël. Ce livre reconstitue minutieusement la chronologie des événements, et il rétablit des liens de cause à effet renversés par la propagande. Il décrypte aussi les formes, souvent très subtiles, par lesquelles cette désinformation a circulé – et continue de circuler - dans les médias français.

The volume sheds light on Ancient Near Eastern kingship by focusing on its constant urge for legitimation. Thus, it highlights specific aspects like royal building activities, warfare and wisdom and frames these into material and textual expressions that take the powerful form of narratives. The contributions made in this volume look for specific topoi of kingship and examine which shapes they took and why. The publication determines which narrative topoi have once been selected to legitimize kingship, which media have been chosen to transmit these narratives, and what kind of narrative strategies have been applied. To consider both, texts and images, in the same margin, the book is based on a dual approach: referring to certain narrative themes both philological and archaeological material will be presented. By joining diverse perspectives of scholars of material culture and texts and their various approaches the publication promises new and special insight into the connection of narration and legitimation in Mesopotamia. It reflects Ancient Near Eastern kingship and its narrative strategies from a interdisciplinary and transmedial point of view and gives new insights into the matter of royal legitimation.
