Every-day by Vincent Ferrane (b. 1974, French) is a series of photographs of transgender or non-binary people, without classification or mention. It focuses on ways of experiencing one's gender which, within the framework of social and cultural norms and conventions, trouble or escape the binary system of feminine and masculine. The images document, through the portraits of Ava, Jackie, Leo, Mathieu, Matthias, Maty and Raya, seized in their privacy, a simple but key event, both symbolic and physical ; that of getting ready, in front of your mirror, to leave your home. In an apparent harmless everyday life, through a repetition of actions, representations, strategies, histories and convictions specific to each person, the ever fragile project of being oneself is revealed. The book contains an essay written by exhibition curator Joel Riff (b. 1984, French).

"Methodologically innovative in its use of mixed-media diary research, this timely book offers a focused sociological study of non-binary people's identities and experiences in the UK. From negotiating a sense of legitimacy when 'not feeling trans enough' to how identities can shift over time, it reveals important nuances of diverse gender identities while offering crucial insights into trans-related healthcare inequalities. The findings of this ground-breaking research mark an important contribution to the wider fields of gender studies, LGBTQ scholarship and medical policy." --

Transgender studies, broadly defined, has become increasingly prominent as a field of study over the past several decades, particularly in the last ten years. The experiences and rights of trans people have also increasingly become the subject of news coverage, such as the ability of trans people to access restrooms, their participation in the military, the issuing of driver’s licenses that allow a third gender option, the growing visibility of nonbinary trans teens, the denial of gender-affirming health care to trans youth, and the media’s misgendering of trans actors. With more and more trans people being open about their gender identities, doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, educators, higher education administrators, student affairs personnel, and others are increasingly working with trans individuals who are out. But many professionals have little formal training or awareness of the life experiences and needs of the trans population. This can seriously interfere with open communications between trans people and service providers and can negatively impact trans people’s health outcomes and well-being, as well as interfere with their educational and career success and advancement. Having an authoritative, academic resource like The SAGE Encyclopedia of Trans Studies can go a long way toward correcting misconceptions and providing information that is otherwise not readily available.

"Many LGBTQ youth are still forced into harmful "treatments" with devastating mental health consequences. This volume explores the history, effects, and danger of so-called conversion therapy. Because conversion "therapy" is not actually therapeutic, it is now more accurately referred to as sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) or gender identity change efforts (GICE). What does the record show about the efficacy and effects of SOCE and GICE? What motivates individuals to seek these harmful treatments, either for themselves or for their children? This book synthesizes findings from a vast literature base to answer these and other important questions, in hopes of fully discrediting SOCE and GICE once and for all. Over the last four decades, considerable research has showed SOCE to be not only ineffective, but harmful. As a result of these findings, professional organizations such as the American Psychological Association (APA) have denounced the practice and recommended affirmative, supportive treatment instead. Although SOCE have been widely discredited, they remain legal in most states and continue to be practiced with lesbian, gay, and bisexual children and adolescents. Furthermore, as the past 20 years have seen an increase in gender nonconforming and transgender individuals, there has been a similar rise in efforts to socially reprogram gender nonconforming children and adolescents. This volume is grounded in the principle long embraced by the scientific and healthcare communities-that same-sex attraction and gender nonconformity are not signs of psychopathology. Rather, sexual and gender minority individuals should be supported in embracing their own identities. This affirmative approach to practice with sexual and gender minorities is consistent with decades of APA policy and ethics"--
