En cinq textes, dont deux inédits, Jean-François Chevrier propose une nouvelle approche de l’œuvre de Walker Evans (1903-1975). Le premier est une étude image par image d’American Photographs, le livre d’Evans paru en 1938 à l’occasion de sa première rétrospective au Museum of Modern art. Le texte suivant commente un reportage réalisé par Evans sur le parti communiste américain pour le magazine Fortune en 1934. L’auteur analyse ensuite le faux vrai dialogue entre Evans et Henri Cartier-Bresson autour de leurs images d’Amérique, puis la réception de l’œuvre d’Evans par les artistes américains des années 1960, et ses échos dans les travaux photographiques de Dan Graham. Dans le dernier texte, il met en relation Many Are Called (1966), le livre constitué de portraits anonymes pris dans le métro new-yorkais à la fin des années 1930, et les portraits dramatiques, « anti-pop », d’Andy Warhol.

Since a few years there is a renewed interest for the study of tumors metabolism. It is however know for a while that contrary to healthy cells, tumor cells prefer using glycolysis to fuel their metabolism instead of respiration. Surprisingly while hypoxia, as en-countered in most cancer, allows to easily explain this preference, aerobic glycolysis is also observed in tumors, a phenomenon known under the name of “Warburg effect”. Tumor cells find in glycolysis the source of biosynthetic material needed for their unre-strained proliferation. This work examines the determinants of the uncoupling between glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylations, with an emphasis on the current attempts to exploit tumor metabolic peculiarities for therapeutic purpose Depuis quelques années, le monde scientifique montre en regain d’intérêt pur l’étude du métabolisme tumoral. On sait toutefois depuis longtemps que par rapport à la plupart des cellules saines, les cellules tumorales préfèrent utiliser la glycolyse comme source énergétique plutôt que la respiration. Etonnamment, alors que l’hypoxie rencontrée dans de nombreuses cellules cancéreuses permet d’aisément expliquer cette préférences, la glycolyse aérobie est également observée dans les tumeurs, ce phénomène est connu sous le nom d’ »effet Warburg ». Les cellules tumorales semblent privilégier cette voie afin de pouvoir subvenir à l’énorme demande en « bio-matériel » qu’exige leur prolifération débridée. Ce mémoire s’inscrit dans ce contexte de la compréhension des intervenants du couplage entre la glycolyse et les phosphorylations oxydatives dans les tumeurs, avec un accent particulier sur les tentatives d’exploitation e ces préférences métaboliques à des fins thérapeutiques

"This work is an exploration of how U.S.-China relations were managed by President George W. Bush. Roberts argues that contrary to conventional wisdom, President Bush conducted a calculated, pragmatic and highly successful strategy toward Beijing, which avoided conflict, resolved crisis and significantly increased economic and diplomatic ties. Roberts identifies key players and polices of the Bush White House and the specific themes of engagement (successful and unsuccessful) that unfolded during Bush's first term. Research is based on analysis of primary and secondary documentation, as well as interviews with key White House actors (including Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage), and two former Australian Prime Ministers. Topics of discussion include China's changing attitude toward international engagement, China's rising economic power and the tensions this triggered in the American establishment, the nature of U.S. China relations, contemporary and ideological understanding of the Bush Presidency as well as the strengths and weaknesses of different sources of information.
