Abstract

Coin Hoards and Hoarding in the Roman World presents fourteen chapters from an interdisciplinary group of Roman numismatists, historians, and archaeologists, discussing coin hoarding in the Roman Empire from c. 30 BC to AD 400. The book illustrates the range of research themes being addressed by those connected with the Coin Hoards of the Roman Empire Project, which is creating a database of all known Roman coin hoards from Augustus to AD 400. The volume also reflects the range of the Project's collaborations, with chapters on the use of hoard data to address methodological considerations or monetary history, and coverage of hoards from the west, centre, and east of the Roman Empire, essential to assess methodological issues and interpretations in as broad a context as possible. Chapters on methodology and metrology introduce statistical tools for analysing patterns of hoarding, explore the relationships between monetary reforms and hoarding practices, and address the question of value, emphasizing the need to consider the whole range of precious metal artefacts hoarded. Several chapters present regional studies, from Britain to Egypt, conveying the diversity of hoarding practices across the Empire, the differing methodological challenges they face, and the variety of topics they illuminate. The final group of chapters examines the evidence of hoarding for how long coins stayed in circulation, illustrating the importance of hoard evidence as a control on the interpretation of single coin finds, the continued circulation of Republican coins under the Empire, and the end of the small change economy in Northern Gaul

Abstract

The first volume of Egyptian Hoards offers a complete list of 278 hoards containing Ptolemaic coins in gold, silver, or bronze, found in Egypt and in the sphere of influence of the Lagid kings. Forty-nine of these hoards are documented here for the first time. The volume consists predominantly of articles presenting and analyzing the new hoards, enlarged hoards, and older hoards restudied in light of recent numismatic scholarship. For the most part the articles are generously illustrated: the plates feature more than 3500 coins in color. Following in the tradition of the Inventory of Greek Coin Hoards (IGCH) and the ten volumes of Coin Hoards (CH), Egyptian Hoards I collects and analyzes the coin hoards which constitute a major contribution to the study of the monetarization of Egypt and the circulation of coinage in the country, with very important implications for our understanding of the economy of the region. e premier volume d’Egyptian Hoards offre la liste complète des 278 trésors (dont 49 inédits) composés de monnaies ptolémaïques en or, en argent et en bronze, trouvés en Égypte et dans les zones d’influence des rois lagides.

Abstract

This richly illustrated volume analyses eight new Celtic gold hoards from the southern Netherlands and Belgium, consisting of gold coinage and in several cases also gold ornaments. The study of these hoards provides a wealth of new information on the archaeological contexts in which they were found, on the dating of many coin types and jewelry, and on the social role of gold in pre-Roman society. All these hoards seem to have been buried in the 50's BC, thus making a direct association with the historical context of Caesar's war campaigns in Northern Gaul very plausible. This makes the volume important for archaeologists as well as numismatists and historians.
