Chi la capì fu forse soltanto Socrate, che, secondo una tradizione, rimase in piedi durante tutto lo spettacolo, come a sottolineare che era proprio lui il personaggio satireggiato. A Socrate Aristofane sceglie di avvicinarsi attraverso le parole di Strepsiade, il contadino rozzo e balordo: il testo ha trovate comiche di una bellezza vertiginosa – Socrate che misura la lunghezza dei salti della pulce, o risolve il problema se le zanzare cantino con la bocca o con il deretano –, dove la volgarità si trasforma in un lirismo comico-fantastico."--
