"Ever since the time of Francis of Assisi, a commitment to voluntary poverty has been a controversial aspect of religious life. This volume explores the interaction between poverty and religious devotion in the mendicant orders between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. While poverty has often been perceived more as a Franciscan than as a Dominican emphasis, this volume considers its role within a broader movement of evangelical renewal associated with the mendicant transformation of religious life. At a time of increased economic prosperity, reformers within the Church sought new ways of encouraging identification with the person of Christ. This volume considers the paradoxical tension between voluntary poverty as a way of emulating Christ and involuntary poverty as situation demanding a response from those with the means to help the poor. Drawing on history, literature and visual arts, it explores how the mendicant orders continued to transform religious life into the time of the renaissance. The papers in this volume are organised under three headings, prefaced with an introductory essay by the editors: Poverty and the Rule of Francis, exploring the interpretation of poverty in the Franciscan Order; Devotional Cultures, considering aspects of devotional life fostered by mendicant religious communities, Franciscan, Augustinian and Dominican; Preaching Poverty, on the way poverty was promoted and practiced within the Dominican Order in the later Middle Ages and Renaissance." --

Mythen erfüllen ihre begründende Funktion, indem sie von Gründungen berichten. Die Gründungsgeschichten der Bettelorden sind immer auch die Geschichten ihrer Gründer. Sie erinnern an die charismatische Phase der jeweiligen Ordensgemeinschaft und bewahren das tatsächliche oder fiktive Charisma des Gründers im Narrativ. Die Mythen der mittelalterlichen Franziskaner, Dominikaner und Augustiner-Eremiten begründen als stetige Appelle an die Ordensangehörigen deren totale Erfassung durch die normativen Ansprüche ihrer Gemeinschaften und leisten dadurch einen wesentlichen Beitrag zu deren Dynamik wie zu ihrer Stabilisierung.

Les travaux de ces dernières années confirment que les livres tiennent une place centrale dans l'organisation des couvents mendiants et dans leurs pratiques économiques. Au quotidien, les livres font partie intégrante de la vie des couvents, comme vecteur de connaissances, support d'édification et outil de communication. Les frères les acquièrent pour étudier, pour transmettre les savoirs et pour discipliner la société. Les soeurs sont aussi, souvent, familières de la culture écrite, qui peut représenter un lieu de rencontre et de complémentarité entre les communautés masculines et féminines. Les contributions réunies dans ce volume s'attachent à considérer les différentes formes sous lesquelles les uns et les autres ont exprimé leur adhésion à la culture livresque, ou leurs éventuelles réserves, et reconnaissent dans la tension entre stabilité et itinérance l'un des points essentiels de l'identité culturelle des ordres mendiants. Parmi les aspects étudiés, figurent, en particulier, les réseaux institutionnels et interpersonnels, où les échanges de livres ont eu une très grande ampleur à l'humanisme, ainsi que les conditions historiques qui marquent le passage du manuscrit à l'imprimé.
