Destinées à la lecture comme à la représentation, les Passions dramatiques françaises participent à la fois du spectacle et des théories du signe en vigueur à la fin du Moyen Age. Pour le spectateur chrétien, les corps des acteurs sont-ils des icônes désignant le divin, ou des idoles exerçant les séductions du sensible ? Parce qu’au plan historique Passions et prédication se répondent, le corps du Christ torturé y fonctionne comme signe de la Passion nécessaire à la Rédemption. Et entre scolastique thomiste et mimesis aristotélicienne, par similitude ou par opposition au Christ, le jeu des acteurs obéit à une typologie qui favorise la méditation de la ressemblance divine. Cependant, chaque corps se présente aussi comme un objet singulier, que le spectateur doit identifier avant d’en déchiffrer le sens. Son apparition se conforme alors à l’occamisme que reformule un Gerson, mais aussi à la définition néo-platonicienne de la mimesis, production consciente d’une réalité illusoire. Porté par le rythme du rondeau, du Planctus, l’acteur produit un jeu qui se sait dissemblable de son divin modèle, et suscite avant tout l’émotion. Les Passions offrent ainsi au débat qui opposait l’idole à l’icône une alternative où l’édification cohabite avec le plaisir du spectacle.
