Depuis sa conception au 15e siècle, le retable de « L’agneau Mystique » a connu de nombreuses aventures. Il est sauvé de la folie destructrice durant la Révolution Française, en étant transporté en charrette jusqu’à Paris. Il sera mis en danger lors du premier conflit armé mondial, puis sera sauvé par les « Monuments Men » à la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, à Altaussee en 1945. Le deuxième volet de l’œuvre sera volé en 1934 et reste une des énigmes de l’histoire de l’art : où est-il passé ? Tant de questions et d’anecdotes qui se doivent d’être racontées pour cette œuvre d’art qui a traversé les siècles.

L'Agneau mystique des frères Van Eyck (1432) est unanimement reconnu comme œuvre picturale sublime, avec un rayonnement et une influence exceptionnels. Ce fut la première peinture à l'huile de grande taille et le mysticisme religieux s'en dégage avec force. Le retable se lit presque comme un ABC du christianisme, allant de l'Annonciation au sacrifice symbolique du Christ : « l'agneau mystique » représenté sur un autel dans un paysage paradisiaque, versant son sang dans le Saint Graal. Ce livre regroupe pour la première fois un grand nombre de savoirs lié à L'Agneau mystique - soit le monumental polyptyque réalisé par les frères Hubert et Jan Van Eyck en collaboration avec un atelier de renom et un ensemble de conseillers sur le plan du contenu. Ce livre nourrit une ambition similaire : réunir des experts des disciplines les plus diverses. Ce n'est qu'en combinant les points de vue des spécialistes en histoire de l'art, des historiens, des philosophes, des scientifiques du religieux, des mathématiciens et des spécialistes de l'optique que l'on peut pleinement saisir la richesse et la profondeur de ce chef-d'œuvre.

The outer panels of the Ghent Altarpiece had been overpainted to a considerable extent. The virtuosity of the Eyckian technique and aesthetics remained hardly visible. And yet, this had never been observed before the start of the conservation treatment. By removing the overpaint, the tonal richness and the coherent rendering of light and space once again came to the fore. Especially the suggestion of volumes and the spaciousness of the ensemble gained strength because of the virtuoso play of deep shadows and bright light accents, and not in the least because of the surprising trompe-l'oeil effect of the frames conceived as a stone framework. Or to put it in the words of the comments of one of the experts, dr. Maryan Ainsworth: "The paintings live and breathe again in the time of the Van Eyck brothers". The sharp observation skills, the quick, accurate execution, the knowledge, curiosity and ingenuity about all the things that are depicted, are now unveiled after centuries. The profit for the knowledge of and further research into the essence of Eyckian aesthetics is considerable. And finally there is the discovery that the much-discussed quatrain was applied simultaneously with the polychromy of the frames: a real 'coup de foudre' in the discourse of the current art-historical research! The subtleties of the Eyckian technique could also be mapped out in more detail. How the Van Eycks managed to keep the final result and the desired effect in mind during every phase of the execution, from imprimatura to finishing touch. The artists made a statement about the art of painting, giving 'technique' as such a new prominence. The Ghent Altarpiece may be understood at some point as a major showpiece for a highly sophisticated pictorial technique.

In Het geheugen van de Lage Landen schuilen vele plaatsen van herinnering. Deze lieux de mémoire zijn niet noodzakelijk fysieke plekken. Het zijn symbolische knooppunten, die letterlijk of figuurlijk kunnen zijn. Het zijn pleisterplaatsen van het geheugen. De voetbalderby der Lage Landen is zo'n pleisterplaats, net als de Val van Antwerpen, Oranje, het Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal en de Aula van de Gentse universiteit. Net als Godfried Bomans, Willem Elsschot en de Vlaamse Golf. Net als tal van andere plekken, mensen, gebeurtenissen en concepten. In Het geheugen van de Lage Landen worden eenendertig plaatsen van herinnering tot leven gewekt. Zij laten zich niet begrenzen door de contouren van een natiestaat, maar hebben de mentale ruimte van de Lage Landen als horizon. Zij herinneren aan wat die landen verenigt, maar ook aan wat hen verdeelt en aan hoe zij elkaar geïnspireerd hebben. Dit boek brengt deze geheugenplaatsen in kaart, zonder nostalgie, maar met zin voor nuance en met oog voor detail. Het biedt een verrassend perspectief op de geschiedenis van de Lage Landen.
