Abstract

"A validating new approach to the long-term grieving process that explains why we feel "stuck," why that's normal, and how shifting a perception of grief can help us grow--from the New York Times bestselling author of Motherless Daughters Shouldn't I be over this by now? Why do I still feel the pain? Because of the common assumption that grief should be time-limited, too many of us believe we've done it "wrong" when sadness reemerges months or even years after a major loss. In The AfterGrief, Hope Edelman offers a new and reality-affirming paradigm: grief is not an emotion to pass through on the way to "feeling better," but a state that we repeatedly return to as we experience important life transitions and new crises. Drawing from her own encounters with the ripple effects of early loss, as well as interviews with more than seventy-five people, Edelman offers profound advice for reassessing loss and adjusting the stories we tell ourselves about its impact on our identities. With guidance for reframing a story of loss, finding equilibrium within it, and experiencing renewed growth and purpose, The AfterGrief shows that though grief may be a lifelong process, it doesn't have to be a lifelong struggle"--

Abstract

The death of a parent marks an emotional and psychological watershed in a person's life. For children and teenagers, the loss of a parent if not handled sensitively can be a lasting trauma, and for adults too, a parent's death can be a tremendous blow. When Parents Die speaks to bereaved children of all ages. Rebecca draws on her personal and professional understanding of parental loss, as well as the experiences of many other adults, teenagers and children, to provide the reader with an honest, compassionate and insightful exploration of the experience of losing a parent. The book covers the entire course of grieving, from the immediate aftermath of the death through to the point of recovery, paying particular attention to the many circumstances that can prolong and complicate mourning, including sudden death and suicide. An indispensable aid to the bereaved and the many professionals who work with them, When Parents Die is written in a clear and sympathetic style. It has been fully revised for this third edition to take recent research into account. " Rebecca Abrams has been talking to and helping parent-bereaved people for over twenty years and her experience is unmatched. She wears her knowledge lightly and makes no attempt to burden her readers with erudite details of research findings and theoretical models. Instead, she provides us with insights and solutions to the numerous problems and distressing feelings to which the death of a parent can give rise." Colin Murray Parkes, OBE MD FRCPsych. The only way we will ever really understand what it means to grieve is when we learn from those who are bereaved and can share their experience with us. This book is a wonderful example of how Rebecca Abrams used her own experience with death and the grief that followed to help herself and others." Dr Phyllis R. Silverman, Co-Principal Investigator, Harvard Child Bereavement Study, USA

Abstract

"Superhero Grief uses modern superhero narratives to teach the principles of grief theories and concepts and provide practical ideas for promoting healing. Chapters offer clinical strategies, approaches, and interventions, including strategies based in expressive arts and complementary therapies. Leading researchers, clinicians, and professionals address major topics in death, dying, and bereavement, using superhero narratives to explore loss in the context of bereavement and to promote a contextual view of issues and relationship types that can improve coping skills. This volume provides support and psychoeducation to students, clinicians, educators, researchers, and the bereaved while contributing significantly to the literature on the intersection of death, grief, and trauma"--

Abstract

Archetypal Grief: Slavery’s Legacy of Intergenerational Child Loss is a powerful exploration of the intergenerational psychological effects of child loss as experienced by women held in slavery in the Americas and of its ongoing effects in contemporary society. It presents the concept of archetypal grief in African American women: cultural trauma so deeply wounding that it spans generations. Calling on Jungian psychology as well as neuroscience and attachment theory, Fanny Brewster explores the psychological lives of enslaved women using their own narratives and those of their descendants, and discusses the stories of mothering slaves with reference to their physical and emotional experiences. The broader context of slavery and the conditions leading to the development of archetypal grief are examined, with topics including the visibility/invisibility of the African female body, the archetype of the mother, stereotypes about black women, and the significance of rites of passage. The discussion is placed in the context of contemporary America and the economic, educational, spiritual and political legacy of slavery. Archetypal Grief will be an important work for academics and students of Jungian and post-Jungian studies, archetypal and depth psychology, archetypal studies, feminine psychology, women’s studies, the history of slavery, African American history, African diaspora studies and sociology. It will also be of interest to analytical psychologists and Jungian psychotherapists in practice and in training.
