Discusses the career and works of the 19th-century German Jewish reformer and scholar of religion. His treatment of the relationship between the Jesus of the New Testament and early Judaism challenged many antisemitic assumptions and conclusions of contemporary and subsequent Christian scholars, including liberal Protestant theologians. Geiger saw Jesus as a Pharisaic Jew, but this view totally destabilized Christian perspectives. Geiger was the first Jew to be thoroughly versed in Christian scholarship and to be armed with an array of rabbinic textual evidence unknown to his Christian counterparts. Yet as much as Geiger railed against Christian anti-Judaism, his own anti-Christian attitudes remined equally tenacious. Christian reactions to his writings frequently intensified the negative depiction of Judaism, particularly of the Pharisees, and insisted upon the opposition between Jesus and Judaism.

Early Christians built on the stories of Jesus' birth found in the New Testament. Their later accounts, many of them found nowadays among collections of non-canonical ('apocryphal') texts, are important and interesting. They give insights into the growth of Christian theology, especially concerning the role and status of Mary, and also the way in which the earliest stories were elaborated and interpreted in popular folk religion. A range of the earliest accounts is presented here in fresh translations; it includes some rare Irish material. The texts are arranged in small units and synoptically, in order to permit readers to compare texts and to see the differences and similarities between them. J.K. Elliott has selected and arranged the texts, and he provides an introductory chapter to the genre. He also includes a full and helpful bibliography to benefit readers who may wish to pursue this comparative study more deeply.

"This academic catalogue provides access for the first time to the medieval manuscripts and fragments preserved in the Benedictine Convent of Nonnberg in Salzburg, which was founded in the early 8th century. The current holdings of the library encompass a relatively small collection of medieval works, with 108 manuscripts and 125 fragments from the early 9th to the middle of the 16th century. The library of Nonnberg holds, compared to other monasteries, very few complete manuscripts written in Latin, all of them with exclusively liturgical content. Breviaries, psalters and litanies as well as processionals, antiphonals and hymnals are represented. Also, the collection of fragments, all of which but one are in Latin, consists mainly of liturgical texts. Themes of a religious nature form the topics of all the manuscripts in German. Alongside a large number of prayer books, the vernacular manuscripts range from passages from the Bible (the epistles of Paul, the Gospels), accounts of the life of Christ and the passion, the exegesis of the Rule of Saint Benedict and acts of the saints to devotional stories, sermons, catechetical, ascetic and mystical texts. In contrast to the codices which were once in the possession of the monastery but are now in Munich and in American libraries, the remaining ones at Nonnberg are mainly paper manuscripts designated for everyday use and completely devoid of any representative character. While, in general, rubrications are the only ornamentations found in most of the manuscripts, some miniatures of higher quality depicting saints can be found occasionally in prayer books as well as woodcuts and engravings in 16th-century codices."--
