Les réalisations de Toyô Itô, qui associent des éléments issus de la tradition architecturale japonaise et des emprunts aux technologies les plus contemporaines, n'ont cessé de fasciner. Le passage, au début des années 1980, d'une architecture de béton à une architecture métallique amène Toyô Itô à concevoir des détails complexes et originaux qui créent transparences et fluidité, prolongeant les écrans translucides de l'architecture japonaise traditionnelle et favorisant les liens entre extérieur et intérieur.
