"This book examines the career of the New York-based artist Sherrie Levine, whose 1981 series of photographs "after Walker Evans"--Taken not from life but from Evans's famous Depression-era documents of rural Alabama -- became central examples in the 1980s theorizing of postmodernism in the visual arts."--Book cover.

Art into Ideas: Essays on Conceptual Art provides an overview of one of the most important and influential developments in American and European art over the past thirty years. Robert Morgan defines and elucidates the premises of Conceptual Art, focusing on works by a range of international artists, including Joseph Kosuth, Hans Haacke, Sherrie Levine, and Joseph Beuys. He examines its evolution, from its inception in the 1960s through the 1980s, relating the movement to historical and cultural contexts, as well as to important theoretical and critical issues that emerged during these decades. Defining three primary modes of representation that characterize Conceptual Art - the philosophical, the structuralist, and the systemic - Morgan then applies these concepts in analyses of a variety of media, including painting, photography, books, and performance

Contemporary art is the object of inflated and widely divergent claims. But what kind of discourse can open it up effectively to critical analysis? Anywhere or Not at All is a major philosophical intervention in art theory that challenges the terms of established positions through a new approach at once philosophical, historical, social and art-critical. Developing the position that “contemporary art is postconceptual art,” the book progresses through a dual series of conceptual constructions and interpretations of particular works to assess the art from a number of perspectives: contemporaneity and its global context; art against aesthetic; the Romantic pre-history of conceptual art; the multiplicity of modernisms; transcategoriality; conceptual abstraction; photographic ontology; digitalization; and the institutional and existential complexities of art-space and art-time. Anywhere or Not at All maps out the conceptual space for an art that is both critical and contemporary in the era of global capitalism.
