Alexithymia is a deficiency in the identification and the expression of emotions. We know that this feature has an implication on some physical or mental illnesses. Therefore, we wanted to study the impact of the latter on a chronic disease, namely the diabetes (types 1 and 2 combined). We have explored alexithymia and its implications for diabetes and its relationship with depression, locus of control and sociod emographic characteristics of the subject. Methods : 40 diabetic patients and 173 controls were included in this study. Alexithymia was assessed by the "Toronto Alexithymia Scale" (TAS-20) and the "Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire" (BVAQ), depression by Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-13), locus of control by the Question naire of the place of multidimensional health monitoring. Results :Diabetics were more alexithymic than controls (F = 4.163; sig = 0.043). The relationship between alexithymia and depression has been observed both in controls than in diabetic subjects (R = 0.433; sig <0.001). Diabetic subjects were more depressed than controls (F = 8.640; Sig = 0.004), but this relationship disappears if we control alexithymia. We have also shown that diabetics are more external than controls, with a Power of other larger (PHLC).Within the population, control subjects in couple are less alexithymic than non-in-cou plesubjects (F = 5.591;. Sig = 0.019); alexithymia was decreasing with the Jevel of education (F = 3.628; sig = 0.014).Conclusion : Our research confirms that alexithymia is an unfavorable factor for health. The originality of our work is to discuss the relationship between alexithymia and management of diabetes. Under a bio-psycho-social approach of the person and of his disease, effective diabetes management wants the caregivers to take account of alexithymia, depression, locus of control but also the social and emotional life of his patient.

Emerging conceptualizations of major emotional disorders emphasize their commonalities rather than their differences, including considerable overlap in disorder phenomenology, a common set of vulnerabilities to development of emotional disorders, and generalization of treatment response across disorders. Current research lends support for a unified transdiagnostic approach to treatment of these disorders that considers these commonalities and is applicable to a range of emotional disorders. Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders, part of the TreatmentsThatWork series of therapist manuals and patient workbooks, is a radical departure from disorder-specific treatments of various emotional disorders, and is designed to be applicable to all anxiety and unipolar mood disorders, as well as other disorders with strong emotional components, such as many somatoform and dissociative disorders. The Unified Protocol (UP) capitalizes on the contributions made by cognitive-behavioral theorists by distilling and incorporating the common principles of CBT present in all evidenced based protocols for specific emotional disorders, as well as drawing on the field of emotion science for insights into deficits in emotion regulation. The UP contains seven modules and focuses on four core strategies: becoming mindfully aware of emotional experience; reappraising rigid emotion laden attributions; identifying and preventing behavioral and emotional avoidance; and facilatating exposure to both interoceptive and situational cues associated with emotional experiences. Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders will be an essential resource for all therapists and psychiatrists who implement CBT strategies, as well as any clinician treating anxiety and depressive disorders.

Alexithymia is a personality trait characterised by difficulty identifying and describing subjective emotional feelings, a restricted imagination, and an externally oriented style of thinking. Individuals with high levels of this trait are at risk of developing several common psychiatric disorders. The concept of alexithymia has evolved considerably over the past twenty years, and this important new work responds to the need for a definitive book on the subject. The research, theory and clinical issues surrounding alexithymia are discussed in depth, examining the psychological, biological and social aspects of the construct and their related outcomes. Featuring contributions from researchers and clinicians in the field of emotion processing and regulation, chapters include methods for assessing and reducing alexithymia, and research findings from diverse fields of scientific enquiry including genetics, neuroimaging studies, emotion regulation, attachment and trauma research, and comorbidities with a number of psychiatric and medical disorders.

An entirely new perspective on how emotions influence mental and physical health. The authors present recent thinking about the development and regulation of emotions, and argue that several common but difficult to treat psychiatric illnesses, including drug addictions, eating disorders, panic disorder and post traumatic stress disorders, are a consequence of an inability to regulate distressing emotions through mental processes. The book also advances a model in which dysregulated emotions may alter other bodily systems and thereby contribute to the development of physical illnesses and diseases. Generously illustrated throughout with clinical vignettes and providing descriptions of innovative therapeutic approaches, this book offers a valuable and stimulating reference for clinicians and researchers alike.
