“Los sentidos del agua” es el tema del número que Revista de Occidente publica en noviembre. Patrocinado por el Gobierno de Aragón y coordinado por Jorge Lozano, este extraordinario de más de 300 páginas reúne un texto del último Premio Estocolmo (“el Nobel del Agua”) Asit K. Biswas, inéditos de Italo Calvino y Umberto Eco, una selección de páginas rescatadas de Ortega y Gasset, María Zambrano y Francisco Ayala y un apretado conjunto de ensayos que, desde la perspectiva de la filosofía, la semiótica, la historia, el arte, la literatura, la ecología, etc., intentan dar una visión compleja y variada de la importancia del agua en nuestro mundo y nuestra cultura. Especialistas como José María Blázquez, Ignacio Gómez de Liaño, Félix Duque, Michel Maffesoli, Patrizia Magli, Bruno Remaury, Juan Alonso, Joaquín Araujo, Susann Waldmann, Omar Calabrese, Andrés Sánchez Robayna, Santos Zunzunegui, Alfredo Aracil y Sarah Maclaren estudian los mitos, símbolos y significados ocultos del agua; el papel que desempeña en las distintas concepciones del mundo; sus implicaciones religiosas y filosóficas; su presencia en el arte del pasado y de hoy mismo; el modo en que ha inspirado a poetas y cineastas; su asociación con lo sublime, la fantasía y el juego en la arquitectura y el trazado de jardines; los problemas que su escasez provoca en los umbrales del siglo XXI… Los artistas plásticos tienen también su representación en el número, que recoge un proyecto de fuente del escultor Alberto comentado por su hijo, Alcaén Sánchez, un montaje fotográfico de Rogelio López Cuenca y una serie de acuarelas sobre fuentes de Roma del pintor José Cerdá.

Although fictional—and often fantastic—representations of nature have been a distinguishing feature of Latin American literature for centuries, ecocriticism, understood as the study of literature as it relates to depictions of the natural world, environmental issues, and the ways in which human beings interact and identify with their natural surroundings, did not emerge as a field of scholarly interest in the region until the end of the twentieth century. This volume employs an ecocritical lens in order to explore and question the use of the river imagery in Latino and Latin American literature from the colonial period to our modern world, creating a space in which to examine both its literal and figurative meanings, associated as much with processes of a personal nature as with those of the collective experience in the region. The slow, meandering streams of nostalgia, the raging currents of conflict or the stagnant waters of social decay are just a few of the ways in which the river has become an important symbol and inspiration to many of the region’s writers. This book offers a diverse collection of writings that, through a trans-historical and trans-geographical perspective, allows us, from the vantage point of the twenty-first century, to reflect on the rich and dynamic image of the river and, by extension, on the vital context of Latin/o America, its people and societies
