River floodplains represent a most important component of the environment. They play a critical role in the routing and storage of floodwaters and frequently represent unique and valuable habitats. Increasingly, such areas are under pressure form human activity in a wide variety of forms. This volume seeks to outline recent major research developments that have taken place in the study of floodplain processes. The chapters represent the results of recent engineering, geomorphological, hydrological, planning and other specialist developments. The book will contribute to research not only within the specialist research disciplines outlined, but also in the more interdisciplinary challenges facing river management.

This book discusses the human influence on flood generation, integrating perspectives from climatic, hydrological, pedological, and geological factors. It highlights how human actions, such as urban planning and agricultural practices, can modify the intensity and frequency of floods. The work is based on the proceedings of a seminar held in Paris in November 1996, organized by the GIP HydrOsystèmes and various French research organizations. The book aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex causal networks behind flood events and emphasizes the need for coordinated scientific inquiry to manage flood risks effectively. It targets researchers, policymakers, and those involved in environmental management, presenting state-of-the-art knowledge and encouraging dialogue between scientific communities and stakeholders.

This comprehensive manual is designed to give archaeologists the necessary background knowledge in environmental science required to excavate and analyse archaeological sites by rivers and on floodplains. Part I covers the techniques for studying alluvial environments, while Part II reviews the literature on the archaeology of alluvial environments and presents new information on alluviation and site formation in both the British Isles and Mediterranean. An important theme running through the book is the interaction between climatic and cultural forces and the transformation of riverine environments. Bringing together information on the evolution and exploitation of floodplain and river landscapes, it draws on examples from Britain, Europe, North America and Australasia. Alluvial Geoarchaeology will also interest physical geographers, geologists and environmental scientists.
