Abstract

This extraordinary new book is issued in both hardback and paperback versions. It is a collection of 27 academic essays on the life and cult of St Guthlac, the saint who was honoured at Crowland (or Croyland) Abbey in the Lincolnshire fens. Guthlac had his hermitage there from the late-seventh century till his death in 714. Many of the essays originated in a conference on Guthlac held in 2014 but there are additional studies, including an edition and translation of the twelfth-century Miracles of St Guthlac and the story of the movement of his remains into a splendid new shrine at Crowland. Historians are immensely fortunate that Guthlac’s life was recorded in a very early biography by the monk Felix, writing in the mid-eighth century, which records early miracles and the story of Guthlac’s extraordinary battles with fen demons, his relationship with Æthelbald, soon to become king of the Mercians, and his early life as a warrior fighting on the Welsh borders, a way of life he repented from, taking his clerical training at Repton monastery before becoming a hermit to fight evil for a different lord. The book is graced with 32 pages of colour plates, which include many manuscript and stained-glass images, and there are many black-and-white illustrations in the main text, including reproductions of the entire Guthlac Roll in Jane Roberts’ essay. The architecture and history of Crowland Abbey, and the influence of earlier hagiography on the style of Felix’s Life, are common themes. The book is concluded with an index of defiant comprehensiveness. Now published during the coronavirus lockdown, it is finally available for safe mail order!

Abstract

A Thesaurus of Old English is conceptually arranged, and presents the vocabulary of Anglo-Saxon England within ordered categories. This allows the user to approach the materials of the Thesaurus by subject rather than through an alphabetic index as is the case for many thesauri. The provision of brief indications of meaning at all levels of this scheme allows word-senses to follow on from ideas explained, so that this thesaurus incorporates information about word meaning and could be described as an inside-out dictionary, with meanings first and then words. In addition to providing hitherto unavailable information for linguists, historians of language, authors, students of English, and textual scholars, A Thesaurus of Old English is a rich resource for investigating social and cultural history, showing the development of concepts through the words that refer to them. The Thesaurus can be consulted online at the University of Glasgow website .

Abstract

In emulation of Professor Éamonn Ó Carragáin, who has, over the last few decades, demonstrated how words and images together join in that extraordinary cultural achievement which is the Ruthwell Cross, the volume seeks to transcend the established methods of the single discipline. The twenty-six essays draw together insights from fields as diverse as archaeology, art history, and liturgy to reflect on the literature and material culture of the Anglo-Saxons. The first section looks outwards from the insular context, to medieval Rome, more generally to western Europe, and backwards to the world-geography of the ancient world; its illustrations include colour plates to illumine the hangings, clothing and vestments extant from Anglo-Saxon England. A range of texts is considered in the central section, Latin, English, and Old Norse. The third section focuses on sculpture, buildings and the insular landscape, juxtaposing the sculptured stonework of Northern Britain with early Christian monuments and remains from Ireland; among the illustrations are striking coloured photographs of Irish ecclesiastical sites. The contributors are from Canada, the United States, Italy, Britain, and Ireland.
