Peter Paul Rubens (1577& 1640) was a prodigious artist whose works were prized by the rulers of the royal courts across Europe. He was also an international diplomat, shrewd businessman, linguist, and intellectual. This extraordinary book traces the fascinating flowering and early evolution of his genius. Handsomely designed and lavishly illustrated, this volume traces Rubens's development from ambitious beginnings to his triumphant return to Antwerp in 1609& after an eight-year Italian sojourn. In Italy, Rubens studied classical sculpture, the Renaissance paintings of Michelangelo and Raphael, and the revolutionary work of Caravaggio. Once back in his native country, he integrated these influences into a style uniquely his own. The most comprehensive examination available of the artist's early years, 'Rubens: A Master in the Making 'documents the remarkable burst of creative energy that resulted in some of the most dynamic and exciting bravura paintings ever produced.

A ground-breaking artist of her time, late sixteenth-century Bolognese artist Fontana is widely considered to be the first woman artist to achieve professional success beyond the confines of a court or a convent. Fontana was the first woman to manage her own workshop, and the first woman to paint public altarpieces and female nudes. She maintained an active career, painting for many illustrious patrons, while also taking on the role of wife and mother. Exploring Fontana's extraordinary life through her paintings and drawings, the exhibition will offer insight into the cultural climate that enabled her to flourish as a female artist of the period. This will be the first monographic exhibition to examine Fontana's work in over two decades, and the first to focus on her portraits. It will bring together a selection of her most highly regarded works from international public and private collections, alongside the artist's celebrated The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon, from the Gallery's own collection.

450 years ago, anecdotes that we would now relate via social media were shared in churches, then the most important places for meeting up with others. In 2016, Museum Mayer van den Bergh is presenting for the first time a selection of church interiors that speak to us about daily life in that period. As well as being places of liturgy, churches were where people celebrated, grieved, paraded, begged, gossiped and even played. Everyday life played out within. And this can be seen in paintings on the subject made in such great quantity in Antwerp in the 16th and 17th centuries. These church interiors are not only masterpieces of perspective, but also present fascinating scenes of existing or lost churches replete with splendid indoor vistas, every corner revealing to us daily life. Museum Mayer van den Bergh is bringing together a number of these church interiors for the first time. This beautifully illustrated catalogue introduces the reader to locations that were the places to meet in the 16th and 17th centuries.
