Verschillen vrouwen en mannen in de wijze waarop zij leidinggeven aan scholen? In dit boek wordt verslag gedaan van een empirisch onderzoek naar het waarheidsgehalte van bestaande vooroordelen. Tevens wordt een overzicht gegeven van literatuur over schoolleiderschap in het algemeen en sekseverschillen daarin. Een groot deel van de vrouwelijke schooldirecteuren en een gelijk aantal mannelijke directeuren in het algemeen voortgezet onderwijs, het middelbaar beroepsonderwijs en het volwassenenonderwijs hebben aan het onderzoek meegewerkt. Niet alleen hun leiderschapsstijlen zijn onderzocht, maar bijvoorbeeld ook hun takenpakketten en tijdsbesteding, onderwijskundige gerichtheid en zelfperceptie. Bovendien is gekeken naar de effecten van hun leiderschap op schoolorganisatie en schoolcultuur. De visie van docenten en leerlingen op het leiderschap is eveneens in kaart gebracht.
