Parody: The Art That Plays with Art explodes the near-universal belief that parody is a copycat genre or that it consists of a collection of trivial and derivative forms. Parody is revealed as an über-technique, a principal source of innovation and invention in the arts. The technique is defined in terms of three major variations that bang, bind, and blend artistic conventions into contrasting pairings, the results of which are upheavals of existing conventions and the formation of unexpected and sometimes startling and revolutionary new configurations. Parodic art fashions a galaxy of contrasts, and from these stem an illusionistic sense of multiplicity and an array of divergent meanings and interpretive paths. Die Untersuchung gründet sich auf einen flexiblen Begriff der Parodie als intertextuelle und metaliterarische Schreibweise, deren Ursprünge von der Parodietheorie der Gegenwart über den russischen Formalismus bis zur Literaturtheorie der Frühromantik und deren Kenntnisnahme durch Goethe zurückverfolgt werden. Entgegen der einschränkenden Assoziation der Parodie mit der Satire wird die Anwendbarkeit des Begriffs auf Goethes subtilen Roman aus der Affinität der Parodie zum Begriff der romantischen Ironie deduziert. Die Textanalyse geht von der auffallenden Metatextualität der Namengebung aus, um deren parodistische Machart aus den Belegen einer bisher nicht ausgewerteten, weil nicht namentlich ausgetragenen Fehde zwischen dem zum Katholizismus bekehrten Wortführer der Jenaer Romantik Friedrich Schlegel und dem Weimarer Klassiker abzuleiten. Obwohl die unmittelbare Provokation in den Schriften des Konversionsjahres lag - F. Schlegels Abhandlung "Über die Sprache und Weisheit der Inder" und seine Rezensionen für die "Heidelberger Jahrbücher" -, hatte der Romantiker bekannterweise den Kampf gegen den Klassizismus auf kunsttheoretischem Feld bereits in seinen Pariser "Gemäldebeschreibungen" eröffnet. Die versteckte Art der Schlegelschen Polemik bestimmte die verrätselte Art der Goetheschen Replik. Gezeigt wird, wie raffiniert sein parodistischer Roman sämtliche sprach- und kunsttheoretischen Verbote und Gebote des Gegners buchstäblich zu erfüllen und gleichzeitg ironisch umzuwandeln vermochte. Anhand dieses intertextuellen Vorgehens kann nicht nur die Schreibweise der "Wahlverwandtschaften" präzis beschrieben werden, sondern Goethes rätselhafter Roman läßt sich auch erstmalig in seine literaturhistorischen Zusammenhänge konkret einordnen.

Il est des concepts difficiles à cerner, ne serait-ce qu'à cause des abus dont ils ont été victimes. Les études réunies dans le présent volume sont le résultat de vifs débats autour de l'(auto-) parodie et des notions, corollaires, de la satire et du rire, de l'intertextualité et de l'interdiscursivité. Entre accords et désaccords, elles contribuent à une redéfinition du "chant à c ôté" et permettent, par son application à des exemples tirés aussi bien des domaines d'oïl que d'oc, de l'italien que du latin,de mieux comprendre les formes que prend la critique, du XIe au XVe siècle. En posant les jalons d'une histoire de la parodie encore à écrire, l'ouvrage place sous un nouvel éclairage des textes que la critique a rarement songé à rapprocher ; en filigrane se dessine le caractère fondamentalement européen de la littérature médiévale.
