Dès le début des années 1880, Verhaeren déploya, à côté de son œuvre de poète, une intense activité de critique dans les journaux et dans les revues.Les arts plastiques constituèrent un champ majeur de l’investissement de cet écrivain dont l’œuvre s’est souvent inspirée de l’univers pictural. Dans ce domaine, comme dans le secteur littéraire, Verhaeren s'est engagé avec passion en faveur de la modernité. Il mit à mal la peinture académique et ses tenants et milita pour la reconnaissance des Modernes, de Manet à Gauguin, de Khnopff à Ensor. Dans ce combat, il plaida aussi bien pour Meunier que Moreau, pour Rodin que Puvis de Chavanne... Il fut le premier acheteur d'un Seurat. L'ensemble de ses articles publiés en français ainsi que ses grandes monographies consacrés à Khnopff, Rubens, Ensor et Rembrandt font l'objet de ce volume dont Paul Aron a établi le texte et pour lequel il a rédigé l'introduction.
