Abstract

Covering a number of important subjects in quantum optics, this textbook is an excellent introduction for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students, familiarizing readers with the basic concepts and formalism as well as the most recent advances. The first part of the textbook covers the semi-classical approach where matter is quantized, but light is not. It describes significant phenomena in quantum optics, including the principles of lasers. The second part is devoted to the full quantum description of light and its interaction with matter, covering topics such as spontaneous emission, and classical and non-classical states of light. An overview of photon entanglement and applications to quantum information is also given. In the third part, non-linear optics and laser cooling of atoms are presented, where using both approaches allows for a comprehensive description. Each chapter describes basic concepts in detail, and more specific concepts and phenomena are presented in 'complements'.

Abstract

Quantum optics has always been the science of atoms and light. Traditionally, the main interest was in the quantum mechanics of the light. With the advances in laser cooling of the 1980s, culminating in the creation of the first Bose-Einstein condensate in 1995, the collective properties of the atoms became to occupy a dominant role. Quantum optics and condensed matter physics of became strongly interdependent. At the same time, quantum-optical control over individual atoms became increasingly comprehensive and precise, giving rise to the prospect of quantum devices, such as the ion trap quantum computer. We decided to write three books, a trilogy, in which the fields of quantum optics, quantum-controlled cold atoms and the physics of large ensembles of cold atoms, including Bose-Einstein condensates, quantum degenerate Fermi gases, and cold atoms trapped in optical lattices are covered in a systematic and consistent manner. The three books in the trilogy will present the theoretical techniques needed to describe the devices based on quantum science. There is a strong emphasis on the construction of quantum devices using the toolbox provided by the precise control now available. The books are intended as textbooks for graduate students. Book I, Foundations of Quantum Optics is quite short, and presents the most basic aspects of the kind of quantum optical formalism needed for both of the subsequent books.
