Martin Luther hiess nicht immer Martin Luther. Sein halbes Leben lang trug er, seit seiner Geburt, den Namen Martin Luder. Zwischenzeitlich nannte er sich auch noch Eleutherios. Warum änderte er seinen Namen? Was steckt hinter diesen Wechseln? Bisher glaubt man, dass die griechische Form Eleutherios ? abgeleitet von 'eleutheros' "frei" ? den Wechsel von Luder zu Luther veranlasst hat. Aber die Quellen widersprechen dieser Annahme. Von grösserer Bedeutung ist vielmehr, dass Luther zeit seines Lebens auch Niederdeutsch sprach und es für Publikationen nutzte, ja nutzen musste. Dieses kam ihm auch bei der Übersetzung der Bibel zugute. 0Das Buch führt den Leser hinein in die Sprachwelt Mansfelds und Wittenbergs, wo man sowohl Hochdeutsch wie auch Niederdeutsch sprach. In Wittenberg lebte Luther, als er seinen Namen änderte. Er gehörte als Professor an der Universität natürlich zu der Oberschicht der Stadt, die schon hochdeutsch sprach. Aber er sprach und verstand problemlos auch das Niederdeutsche. Liegt hier der Schlüssel für die Namensänderung?
