Abstract

Abstract

Since 2008, there has been a renewed search for alternative forms of housing production that can move beyond speculative interests and are based instead on models of co-ownership, co-production, and co-management. Hence the concept of the cooperative has experienced a true renaissance in recent years. This book explores how cooperative housing construction and forms of self-determined building production might offer effective solutions to the global housing crisis, moving us closer to a more equitable and sustainable future through systematic change. With case studies from Germany, Switzerland, Brazil, Uruguay, Ethiopia, and China, as well as a glossary of important terms.

Abstract

How and why are more and more people choosing to build and live in communities? What motivates them, and what different forms can this take? What contribution can architecture and building culture make in this context? This book shows 26 projects from Germany, Europe and further afield that offer answers to these questions and have been realised by collective custom build project initiatives or co-operative housing associations. Using different means and concepts, each of them responds to changing lifestyles and different locations. With the help of innovative planning and building processes, they develop solutions that address the specific needs and wishes of their residents. A central principle is the wish to live within one's own four walls while being part of a community of neighbours and friends, sharing communal spaces and a sense of social commitment. As such, they present ways of combining modern lifestyles with classical principles. Additional essays provide in-depth information on selected aspects of community-oriented housing, ranging from the economic benefits for society as a whole to the specifics of land allocation procedures, social aspects and suitable legal forms.

Abstract

Housing is scarce, that much has become evident in the last few years. As real estate prices in big cities continue to skyrocket, conventional ideas of housing development prove unable to meet demands. The reaction to these challenges has been a silent revolution in contemporary architecture - towards collective building and living. Using models, films, and walk-in displays, the exhibition 'Together! The New Architecture of the Collective' addresses this global phenomenon by presenting a broad array of collective building and living projects from Europe, Asia, and the United States. An overview of historical precedents for the current wave of collectives demonstrates that the idea of collectivity has been a recurring theme in the history of architecture, from the reformist ideas of the nineteenth century to the hippies and squatters of the twentieth who touted the slogan 'Make love, not lofts'

Abstract

Building high-density housing is a diverse and challenging task for planners and architects. This book presents international projects which document the complexity of the task, from the design of the floor plans, the development and use of resources, to the use of economically beneficial building systems. In view of the growing number of diverse life styles, the search for flexible, adaptable floor plans has become a fundamental issue in residential building. That the continued demand in urban centres can only be responsibly satisfied by high-density housing is undisputed. More than ever before, building high-density housing is a diverse and challenging task for planners and architects. This book presents international projects which document the complexity of the task, from the design of the floor plans, the development and use of resources, to the use of economically beneficial building systems. The high quality of the architecture and construction in such residential areas can be clearly seen in the uniform illustrations of the floor plans, and large-scale drawings of details. The introductory contributions discuss extensively the topic of floor plan design and development. This book is a comprehensive review of the current state of residential building, the perspectives and future developments.

Abstract

Swiss architecture is commonly conotated with the names of celebrated architects such as Marion Botta, Peter Zumthor, or Herzog & de Meuron, and with their iconic buildings. Yet there is much more to the topic than, for example, beautiful private houses or spectacular public projects such as museums. This new book looks at the Swiss variety of co-operative housing developments with a special focus on the city of Zurich. Over the past two decades, such developments have changed significantly. Support by public funding and open competitions have helped to design and realise a vast number of highly innovative co-operative projects in Zurich over that period. Many of them can serve as well as models for how to meet the constantly increasing demand for urban housing. 'New Housing in Zurich' is the first comprehensive survey of contemporary co-operative estates in Switzerland's largest city. It features some 50 projects by type, lavishly illustrated with images and plans, thus also providing a typology of multi-unit residential architecture. Essays on the history of co-operative housing in Switzerland, the interplay between co-operatives and the city and their impact on urban development on the larger scale, on new urban and architectural concepts, on co-operatives in the post-industrial age, and on their social dynamics round out the volume.
