Based upon a rich and diverse range of primary sources, including recently discovered correspondence in the Gonzaga archives in Mantua, this book traces Henry's life from his birth in 1551. Providing the first English language biography of Henri, this study thoroughly and dispassionately reassessed his life in light of recent scholarship and in the context of broader European diplomatic, political and religious history. In so doing the book not only provides a more nuanced portrait of the monarch himself, but also helps us better understand the history of France during this traumatic time.

La médaille royale fut introduite sous François Ier. Conçue comme un présent, elle proposait un portrait du roi au naturel avec son emblème de la salamandre. Sous Henri II et les derniers Valois, l’usage se généralisa de représenter le monarque en rex/imperator, sous la forme d’un portrait pseudo-antique ou d’un portrait à l’antique. Sous Henri IV, se développe aussi le portrait mythologique du souverain en héros (Hercule, Mars, etc.), et de Marie de Médicis en Junon. Les revers renvoyaient, quant à eux, à des registres emblématiques, antiques ou mythologiques : la salamandre, Persée, Bellérophon, et surtout Hercule.Cet ouvrage est destiné aux étudiants, numismates, historiens et historiens de l’art, ainsi qu’aux collectionneurs. Marie Veillon (1961-2017), docteur de l’E.H.E.S.S. en 1990, est devenue en 1992 chargée de recherches au Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. Elle a effectué toute sa carrière au Centre d’études supérieures de la Renaissance, poursuivant une œuvre scientifique et d’enseignement sur les médailles et leur interprétation, depuis l’Antiquité jusqu’à la période moderne.
