Abstract

Mass housing in Germany, Russia, and Ukraine represents an enormous volume of housing today and therefore a huge resource for the future development of cities. But transformation of these districts is needed due to the functional, societal, and technical problems and challenges they face. How can sustainable, socially compatible, ecological responsible, and economically efficient development be achieved? The book summarises the results of a three-year research project. Based on the selected case studies, it points out the qualities and values as well as the problems and potentials involved in spatially transforming prefabricated housing estates from the 1960s and 1970s. The specific features and characteristics of the socialist city are evaluated with respect to their potentials and difficulties, and with regard to the requirements placed on future district planning and development. Hence this book contributes to the on-going discussion and serves as a valuable basis for developing planning strategies.

Abstract

This book investigates the development of multi-unit housing typologies that were predominant in a particular city from the 1800s to present day. It emphasises the importance of understanding the direct connection between housing and dwelling in the context of a city, and the manner in which the city is an instructional indication of how a housing typology is embodied. The case studies presented offer an insight into why a certain housing type flourished in a specific city and the variety span across cities in the world where distinct housing types have prevailed. It also pursues how housing types developed, evolved, and helped define the city, looks into how dwellers inhabited their dwellings, and analyses how the housing typologies correlates in a contemporary context. The typologies studied are back-to-backs in Birmingham; tenements in London; Haussmann Apartment in Paris; tenements in New York; tong lau in Hong Kong; perimeter block, linear block, and block-edge in Berlin; perimeter block and solitaire in Amsterdam; space-enclosing structure in Beijing; micro house in Tokyo, and high-rise in Toronto.

Abstract

Communal living, intergenerational living, living for families, handicap-accessible living, living and working, living and leisure time - the wide variety of current demands is shaping future concepts in housing, which will have to do justice to the needs of our increasingly multilayered society. The examples in this new volume in the In Detail series are correspondingly diverse. From the demand for stroller- and wheelchairaccessible housing through facilities that accommodate the needs of senior citizens all the way to the modernization of existing buildings, the selection of projects offers a panoramic overview. Organized thematically, In Detail: Integrated Housing highlights a variety of well-defined topics, such as handicap-accessibility and flexibility of use, and presents them together with explanatory technical articles and examples of realized projects. In closing, it provides addresses of information centers and associations as well as sources of additional information.

Abstract

Abstract

This book is an in-depth history of collective living from around 1850 until today, identifying three motives for sharing housing -economic, political, and social- and providing detailed analysis of residential projects, which are divided into nine housing models. Through comparison of the reasons for establishment, different ways of use, evolutionary paths, and more, it becomes easy to visualize the various models and projects throughout their history and until today, demostrating how shared everyday life, intimacy in housing, and degrees of public access were shaped throughout Europe. This comprehensive presentation and analysis of typologies, house-holds, and lifestyles is combined with user and expert interviews to create a lexicon on the history of collective living. It is an incisive over-view that explores the architectural, sociological, and economic aspects of collective living.
