The Museum of Modern Art announces 'Marcel Broodthaers: A Retrospective', the artist's first museum retrospective in New York. Bringing together some 200 works in multiple mediums, the exhibition explores the artist's critical if under-recognized place in the history of 20th-century art. Marcel Broodthaers is organized by MoMA and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS) in Madrid, in close consultation with the artist's Estate in Brussels. It is organized by Christophe Cherix, The Robert Lehman Chief Curator of Drawings and Prints at MoMA, and Manuel Borja-Villel, Director of MNCARS, with Francesca Wilmott, Curatorial Assistant, MoMA. The exhibition will travel to MNCARS in October 2016 and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen (KNW), Düsseldorf, in early 2017. Marcel Broodthaers's (Belgian, 1924–1976) extraordinary output across mediums placed him at the center of international activity during the transformative decades of the 1960s and 1970s. Setting a precedent for what we call installation art today, his work has had a profound influence on a broad range of contemporary artists, and he remains vitally relevant to cultural discourse at large. Throughout his career, from early objects variously made of mussels, eggshells, and books of his own poetry; to his most ambitious project, the 'Musée d'Art Moderne. Département des Aigles'; and the retrospective 'Décors', made at the end of his life, Broodthaers occupied a unique position, often operating as both innovator and commentator. The exhibition will consider the artist with these lasting contributions in mind.

In 1963, the writer Marcel Broodthaers decided to embark on a career in the visual arts. Yet he never severed his ties to poetry and language, whose systems of meaning make up an integral aspect of his work. Retaining a certain distance to the art world, he posed fundamental questions about art, its mediums, its conceptions of what constitutes an artwork, its representation in museums. To this day, his oeuvre takes a critical stand on art's commercialization strategies. Exhibition-making itself was a key element of Broodthaers's artistic approach. Documenting all of the artist's solo exhibitions that took place during his lifetime, the catalogue is the 1rst ever to highlight that praxis. The extensive chronology and the accompanying detailed pictorial documentation of the most important works of every year together offer a systematic overview of his oeuvre. In addition to scholarly essays and many texts by Marcel Broodthaers himself, the publication also features an extensive series of photographic views of the major retrospective at the Fridericianum.

Met Soleil Politique organiseert het M HKA de eerste overzichtstentoonstelling van de Belgische sleutelkunstenaar Marcel Broodthaers in zijn eigen land sinds een decennium. De voorbije jaren was het werk van Broodthaers te zien in een rondreizende tentoonstelling in topmusea, georganiseerd door het MoMA en Museo Reina Sofía. Het M HKA kiest er echter bewust voor om een eigen project te maken, zoals het dat eerder deed voor Joseph Beuys en James Lee Byars. Soleil Politique focust op Marcel Broodthaers vanuit een Antwerps vertrekpunt met Wide White Space Gallery. De tentoonstelling wil een omvattend beeld geven van de breedte aan thematieken, media- en presentatiestrategieën van Broodthaers. Zo zal voor de eerste keer ooit zijn majestueuze Décor: A conquest by Marcel Broodthaers (1975) in ons land te zien zijn, een meer dan genereuze bruikleen van de V–A–C Foundation uit Moskou. Tegelijkertijd tonen we zelden of nooit tentoongestelde werken en documenten die werden gevonden tijdens het voorbereidend onderzoek. Soleil Politique benadert Broodthaers’ oeuvre vanuit het idee dat kunst altijd politiek is, en dat politiek een constant onderhandelen is zonder slotsom. Dit statement voor complexiteit begint wanneer Broodthaers rond 1967 het woord opnieuw laat interfereren met zijn visueel werk, en woorden of tekst presenteert in verschillende contexten. De eerste tentoonstelling waarin woorden, objecten en verschillende vormen van druk een ensemble vormen, was Le Corbeau et le Renard (1968). Ze werd gepresenteerd in de Wide White Space Gallery, waar hij van 1966 tot 1974 cruciale tentoonstellingen realiseerde. De galerie presenteerde haar kunstenaars ook op de Kunstmarkt in Keulen, een teken van de internationale realiteit op dat moment. Broodthaers’ Musée d’art Moderne, Département des Aigles reisde in 1969 naar Antwerpen, waar hij de Section XVIIe Siècle installeerde in de ruimte A 37 90 89. Marcel Broodthaers, geboren in 1924 als enige zoon van een Vlaamse maître d’hôtel en een Waalse moeder, is een van de reuzen uit de kunstgeschiedenis van de twintigste eeuw. Sinds zijn overlijden in januari 1976 probeert men vat te krijgen op de complexe, erudiete en humoristische kunstenaar die Broodthaers was. Die fascinatie is uitgemond in een rijk discours, een internationale vertegenwoordiging van zijn werk in belangrijke openbare collecties en retrospectieve tentoonstellingen. Traditioneel wordt aangenomen dat Marcel Broodthaers zijn carrière als beeldend kunstenaar begint eind 1963, wanneer hij een pakket exemplaren van zijn dichtbundel Pense-Bête in gips plant en de volgende verklaring aflegt: “Moi aussi, je me suis demandé si je ne pouvais pas vendre quelque chose et réussir dans la vie…” Als een reactie op de nieuwe tendensen binnen de kunst, begint Broodthaers objecten tentoon te stellen; mosselen, frieten, eieren, bakstenen, steenkool en glazen bokalen. Hij bedient zich van de popart-strategie door lokale producten te introduceren in het domein van de beeldende kunst. Eerder was Broodthaers actief als dichter, journalist, fotograaf. Hij was gefascineerd door René Magritte en had veel sympathie voor Marcel Lecomte, en was lid van de communistische partij. Als jonge dichter werd hij geconfronteerd met een poëtische en politieke avant-garde die zich probeerde te verenigen. De tentoonstelling gaat vergezeld van een gelijknamige catalogus die enkele minder bekende bronnen opdiept om naast de mijlpalen uit Broodthaers’ oeuvre zijn tentoonstellingen in Antwerpen te contextualiseren. Er worden nieuwe teksten in opgenomen: Anny De Decker over de tentoonstellingen van Marcel Broodthaers in de Wide White Space Gallery, Marie-Pascale Gildemyn over de (namen van) personen in het werk van Broodthaers, Hannah Brückmuller over La Banque (1964-1967) en de vroege performances van Broodthaers, Lotte Beckwé over Isi Fiszman en la morale d’artiste! Ha! Ha!, ingeleid door een interview met Maria Gilissen-Broodthaers door Yola Minatchy en een tekst van Bart De Baere. De catalogus wordt uitgegeven door het M HKA. Te koop in onze museumshop aan 39,80 euro. Soleil Politique kadert in een reeks monografische tentoonstellingen van het M HKA rond sleutelfiguren van de naoorlogse avant-garde die actief waren in Antwerpen. In 2017 bracht Groeten van de Euraziaat de activiteiten van Joseph Beuys in Antwerpen in kaart, en in 2018 werd met The Perfect Kiss het persoonlijk contact van James Lee Byars met de Brussels/Antwerpse kunstscène onderzocht in het geheel van zijn oeuvre. Het M HKA wenst alle bruikleengevers te bedanken, en in het bijzonder Maria Gilissen-Broodthaers en Marie-Puck Broodthaers voor hun actieve betrokkenheid en talrijke suggesties. We zijn alle enthousiaste getuigen erkentelijk voor het delen van hun herinneringen: Nicole Daled-Verstraeten, Anny De Decker, Philippe De Gobert, Isi Fizman en Laurence Taca, Yves Gevaert, Benjamin Katz, Reiner Speck, Walter Swennen en Roland Vanden Berghe.
