De Verlichting formuleerde voor Europa, dat destijds bijna ten onder ging aan godsdienstoorlogen, een universele oplossing: prioriteit van de rede, scheiding tussen politiek en religie, vrijheid, gelijkheid en solidariteit. Rik Pinxten onderzoekt deze boodschap, die tegenwoordig te gemakkelijk wordt afgedaan als passé. Hij kritiseert de zogenaamde verlichtingsfundamentalisten maar ook de tegenstanders van de Verlichting, die een vaag of uitgesproken religieus radicalisme voorstaan. Hij probeert de idealen van de Verlichting te actualiseren, omdat dit de enige haalbare en heilzame oplossing is om duurzaam en relatief vredevol samen te leven in een multiculturele en religieus gemengde samenleving. We moeten leren de mens te zien als een zebra: met zeer grote gelijkenissen, maar met even belangrijke kleinere verschillen. De vraag is: hoe leren we omgaan met interculturaliteit? Wat met een zebra met Mondriaanmotief? Wat met de volkomen zwarte zebra? De auteur zoekt een antwoord op deze vragen vanuit een humanistisch vrijzinnig perspectief.

This study is a critical examination of the views about the voluntary element of religious faith in contemporary analytic theistic philosophy of religion. The background of the question is the variety of opinions regarding the voluntariness or involuntariness of religious faith. The study examines different propositional attitudes, such as belief, hope, and acceptance, which are taken to be involved in the cognitive aspect of religious faith. Another central theme concerns the practical aspect of religious faith and the attitudes it involves. Questions having to do with the emotional and evaluative aspects of religious faith are also touched upon. In addition, certain traditional theological topics pertaining to voluntariness of faith, namely, topics having to do with such notions as merit of faith and grace, are addressed. Apart from the critical evaluation, this study develops one model of faith, that is, faith as propositional hope.
